Oh yes. (The causes for being born in these places are stealing the robes of the Three Jewels, demolishing the preaching hall, stealing the clothes of parents and those who are suffering, and so on. The cold hells are more painful than the hot hells. In general, regarding the suffering of hell, it is said in the "Letter to a Friend": 'The pain of being stabbed three hundred times a day with short spears, is not even a small part of the suffering of hell, and is difficult to endure.' That's what it says.) Therefore, to know what karma each of these hot and cold hells arises from, one should learn from the sutras such as the "Sutra on Mindfulness," but I have not written it because I am afraid of too many words. The ephemeral sentient beings' hells exist in the desolate empty lands of the human realm, etc. (and also exist on the edge and below the ocean), (without a fixed place,) experiencing the happiness of hell and heaven in rotation every day. As it is said in the "Vinaya-vastu of the Mūlasarvāstivāda": 'During the day, he kills the lives of others, and at night he possesses the qualities of discipline. The good result of this karma, and the sin, are experienced together.' And 'At night he is addicted to stealing, and during the day he possesses the qualities of discipline. The good result of this karma, and the sin, are experienced together.' Just as the ephemeral sentient beings said to the merchant Gero Zhunje. The description of hell ends here. The root of the realm of the pretas (is the great ocean, and their) capital is located five hundred yojanas below this Jambudvipa, where there is a place called the city of the pretas, Serkya. There, the lord of the pretas, the Dharma King Yama, experiences glory like that of a god, caused by increasing non-virtuous deeds and perfected by virtuous deeds. (Scattered in the abodes of gods and humans, existing in the areas of activity on land, water, and in the sky. The king) In his retinue there are thirty-six kinds of pretas, as it is said in the "Sutra on Mindfulness": 'Belly as big as a mountain, mouth like a needle's eye, eating feces, eating filth, eating incense, eating dharma, giving food, drinking water, eating thoughts, eating saliva, eating blood, eating meat, eating burnt smoke, violent, opportunistic, living underground, possessing great power, body burning at night, looking for people's faults, constantly coveting,'

It is said that this is because the results of karma cause external phenomena to appear as messengers of Yama, iron dogs, crows, bats, and so on. The Yogacara and Madhyamaka schools, however, believe that explicitly pointing out places like hell is to accord with the thoughts of those beings. In those places, there are no other beings besides those in hell, nor are they external phenomena. Rather, one's own mind, through the power of negativity, manifests as Rakshasas of Yama, red-hot ground, blazing flames, and terrifying sights, thereby suffering. As stated in the *Bodhicharyavatara*: "Who intentionally made the weapons of hell beings? Who made the red-hot ground? Where did those flames come from? All of these, the Sage has said, arise from sinful thoughts." The dwelling place of most animals is in the outer ocean, while scattered ones are in the realms of humans and desire gods. The Vaibhashikas believe that there are also animals in hell. Asuras reside in the interior below the water line of Mount Meru. As stated in the *Dranpa Nyerzhak*, below the water line of Mount Meru, there are 84,000 yojanas, within which there are four bases. The first is an empty space measured 11,000 yojanas from the water line, and the first ground is 21,000 yojanas, where there is a city called Radiant, which is 8,000 yojanas, and there is Rahu, the son of the Lioness. Then, measuring 11,000 yojanas of empty space, the second base is a different place called Garland of the Moon, where in the city of Two Tree Tops and Constellation Garland, there are Necklace and Steadfast. In the center of Constellation Garland is a lake called All-Seeing Sea, which is five yojanas wide, where gods and asuras wage war, and defeat, victory, death in battle, and humans with human virtues die and are reborn as gods. Through this power, the gods are victorious and the asuras are defeated, just like seeing an image in a mirror. Then, measuring 11,000 yojanas of empty space, the third ground is a place called Good Abode, where in the Profound City there is Flower Garland. Then, measuring 11,000 yojanas, the fourth ground is called Immovable, where in the Beautiful City...
