Since the Bhagavan (bcom ldan 'das, Bhagavan, the Blessed One) has declared the meditation on the three mudras in the six yogas, therefore, a yogi should practice the six-limbed union for the sake of Buddhahood itself. It is also said that for childish beings, the karma-mudra brings happiness; for those of middling capacity, it is the wisdom-mudra; and for the supreme yogis, it is the maha-mudra. The meaning of these words is: According to the views of the earlier Kadampa masters, for those of lower capacity, one should rely on the karma-mudra with characteristics, and practice the four-mudra union with elaboration; for those of middling capacity, one should rely on the wisdom-mudra, which is equal to the number of deities in the mandala, and practice the three-union mudra without elaboration; for those of higher capacity, one should rely on the maha-mudra, contemplating emptiness as numerous as the dust of Mount Meru, and practice the one-union mudra with extreme simplicity. In short, the masters divided the practice into these three, targeting different types of beings—lower, middling, and higher capacity. Those of lower capacity must rely on the karma-mudra to achieve the great bliss of non-regression, those of middling capacity do not rely on the karma-mudra but rely on the wisdom-mudra to achieve great bliss, and those of higher capacity do not rely on the previous two mudras but rely solely on the maha-mudra to achieve great bliss. The so-called four-union mudra refers to: the basis is the non-leaking samaya-mudra, the example is the karma-mudra, the path is the wisdom-mudra, and the result is the maha-mudra, the union of these four. The so-called three-union mudra refers to the union of the karma-mudra and the three that do not belong (ma rtogs pa). The so-called one-union mudra refers to the unity of the maha-mudra and non-leaking (wisdom). Although there is such a view, according to the tantras and commentaries, yogis, based on the three different capacities of lower, middling, and higher, practice the karma-mudra and other three mudras in sequence to achieve the unchanging great bliss, which is not the meaning of union. Because the sutra says 'three mudras and three stages,' it means that a single yogi needs or does not need to rely on the karma-mudra in three stages in sequence. For example, when one obtains the limb of holding and enters the stage of recollection, this is the lower stage of the yogi, at this time he practices the yoga of recollection and binds and increases the Bodhicitta (byang sems) bindu without regression. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is necessary to rely on Mudra (phyag rgya), as stated in the 'King of Tantras': 'The co-emergent bliss (bde ba 'di) of the Victorious One (rdo rje sems dpa', Vajrasattva) (which is the nature of the ground and result) is for the sake of increasing (i.e., obtaining), one should first rely on Karma Mudra (las kyi phyag rgya) (at the time of recollection, for the purpose of stabilizing and increasing the Bodhicitta bindu in the body of the yogi).' Also: 'Fire is the enemy of mercury; if separated from fire, mercury will never be bound. If not bound, there will be no alchemy; if separated from gold, eloquent ones will have no enjoyment. Similarly, if separated from union with a woman (at the time of recollection), the Bodhicitta (thig le, bindu) of the yogis will never perish. If there is no binding, the body (of the yogi) will not be pierced (by great bliss); if not pierced, the body will not give the co-emergent bliss (of the Victorious One) here (in the near path stage of Vajrayana).' Also, as stated in the 'Great Commentary': 'Just as clothes made of stone [thread {silk}] are purified by being burned by fire, similarly, the noble mind (of the supreme yogi) is (purified) by the wisdom of prajna (relying on Karma Mudra). Just as mercury, upon touching fire, flees and does not remain still, similarly, semen separated from skillful means (of the sixfold union) always (declines) from contact with the place of origin (of Karma Mudra). Just as that movement is also completely bound by the power of medicine, etc., upon encountering fire, similarly, the semen (of the yogi) is completely (bound) by the skillful means of extreme yoga (the sixfold union), upon truly encountering wisdom.' Also, as stated in the 'Glorious Supreme Accomplishment': 'Without union with a woman, there is no bliss of liberation. Without union with a woman, there is no suffering fire of existence. Therefore, having carefully considered with your own intelligence, the mantra practitioner should also take what he desires.' Also: 'Without union, the wavering mind will not be bound; if the mind is not bound, the body will not be pierced. Without a pierced body, there is no pure conduct. Without pure conduct, it will not give bliss.' Therefore, at this time of recollection, one should abide in Karma Mudra, and with the fire of Tummo in the navel chakra, melt the ཧཾ་(藏文,梵文天城体ham,梵文罗马拟音ham,汉语字面意思: 种子字) syllable on the forehead, the Bodhicitta bindu, melting the nature of the Bodhicitta liquid, again and again until the Vajra Jewel.
