Moreover, it is not only you who have encountered such impermanence of death. In general, the nature of all conditioned phenomena is impermanent. As the Buddha Bhagavan said: "Monks, all conditioned phenomena are impermanent." And as it is said in the *Dhammapada*: "Alas! All conditioned phenomena are impermanent, they are subject to arising and ceasing." In particular, the solid outer world, that is, the layered mountains, continents, environment, golden mountains, playful oceans, iron mountains, and so on, these hard and solid things are also impermanent. As the Great Orgyen said: "The outer world is destroyed by fire, water, and wind." And the moving inner sentient beings, from the ancient Chakravartin kings to the present-day petty monarchs, down to insects, tiny creatures, and all beings, the superior, middling, and inferior beings in general, and the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Lamas, Khenpos, Acharyas, Sangha, and all who have come for their sake, are also impermanent. As the Omniscient Dharma Lord said: "The inner conditioned phenomena are impermanent, changing and transforming." Likewise, the seasons of this solid and moving realm, summer, winter, autumn, spring, years, months, days, and times, all these are also impermanent. As the Great Orgyen said: "Last year, this year, the seasons above and below, days and nights, moments, time is impermanent." In particular, in this world, those who were born before, those who are now born and existing, and those who will be born in the future, including all beings of the superior, middling, and inferior classes, all are now like you, certainly destined to die, and it is impossible to determine when they will die, and it is certain that death will be of no benefit, these three are inevitably the same. First, the reason why one is certainly destined to die is, as it is said in the *Dhammapada*: "Thus, for all who are born, death is in front." Secondly, it is impossible to determine when one will die. In the *Bodhicharyavatara* it says: "Tomorrow and the next life, which will come first, is impossible to foresee, therefore one should quickly practice virtue." Thirdly, the situation where death is of no benefit is, as it is said in the *Padma Kathang*: "Even if the King of Medicine himself comes, he cannot prolong life when the life force is exhausted, the Great Powerful One with the law

There is no oppression. There is no fence to be touched by hand. There is no spell cast by the eloquent. There is no abandoning of uncherished possessions for ransom. Cowards do not flee to other places. The articulate do not argue and complain. This is what is said. For example, just as the sun sets, no one, high or low, strong or weak, can prevent it. Moreover, in all the realms of the world, represented by our own land, the beings that are born, the houses that are built, the friends that gather, the possessions that are accumulated, none of them are permanent. As it is said in the Vinaya Sutra: "The end of birth is death, the end of building is destruction, the end of gathering is separation, the end of accumulation is exhaustion." Therefore, now that you have experienced the end of birth—the impermanence of death—it is time to clearly elucidate the Guru's teachings. As for the manner of elucidation, although the new and old schools each have their own traditions, if we explain the method of liberation in the bardo according to our own Dzogchen teachings for people of middling faculties, then, from the time you were struck by the illness of death yesterday and the day before, up to the time you were first born from your mother's womb, is the bardo of the birth-place. From the time you are struck by the illness of death until the inner breath ceases, is the bardo of dying. From the time the inner breath ceases until the appearance of the spontaneously arising luminosity, is the bardo of dharmata. From the time the spontaneously arising luminosity disappears until you grasp the life of the next life, it is called the bardo of existence. Among these four bardos, the way to introduce the latter three is: to clarify the arising and confusion of the dying bardo, and then to show the teachings of guidance and transference; to clarify the spontaneously arising bardo of dharmata, and then to introduce that all sounds, lights, and rays are self-manifestations, thereby generating faith and certainty; to clarify the bardo of samsaric existence, and then to bestow the teachings of attaining a good rebirth by desire alone. First, to clarify the arising and confusion of the dying bardo, as it is said in the Wisdom Play: "First, earth dissolves into water, water dissolves into fire, fire dissolves into wind, wind dissolves into consciousness, and that which grasps consciousness itself will enter into the clear light." Therefore, earth dissolves into water, the body (the navel is the knot of the earth wheel dissolves.
