Ba. Listening to the sacred Dharma, protecting the precepts, etc. In short, one should strive to abandon the ten non-virtues and accomplish the ten virtues as much as possible. Then, regarding ordination, prepare a cushion and fold the upper garment neatly on it, as well as a begging bowl and a water strainer. Here, if there are four or more monks who can be requested, the method of requesting can be explained, but that is the extensive method, so if it can be done, it can be done. If it cannot be done, it is not an obstacle, so it is omitted in the abbreviated case. The person to be ordained should prostrate three times to the suitable Khenpo, then squat in front of him with palms together. You, or you who wish to be ordained, need a Khenpo, and not just anyone will do. He must have taken full ordination and have been unbroken for ten years, and possess the two qualities of stability and wisdom, knowing the Vinaya. Such a person is available here, so think, "I will ask the former teacher to be my Khenpo," and repeat after me. Teacher, please listen. I, named so-and-so, request you, teacher, to be my Khenpo. Teacher, please be my Khenpo. Teacher Khenpo, please ordain me. Say this twice. The third time, at the end of "Teacher, please be my Khenpo," add "We will become your Khenpo," keep this in mind, and then repeat the third time. After the third time, be skillful. As a precept for requesting a Khenpo, one should regard the Khenpo as a Buddha, and be respectful, serve, and obey his teachings. Then, instruct a monk who has shaved his head, "Please be a friend to this person who is shaving his head." He takes a water bottle and a razor, makes the supreme giving gesture with his right hand, touches it to the top of the person's head, and asks, "Are you willing to shave your head?" The person also replies, "I am willing." Then he offers the shaved hair to the Khenpo. The Khenpo says, "May the gods who love the white Dharma be greatly pleased." Saying this, he scatters it in the auspicious direction. Then wash the five limbs with water or rinse the mouth. Then prostrate three times in front of the Khenpo, squat down, fold the cushion, lower garment, and upper garment three times inward eight times, and place them on the left shoulder, with the edge of the Dharma robe

Place what is to be done (referring to wearing clothes, etc.) on the left hand, and cover both hands with the right hand from above. This upper garment that is often worn on the upper body is called the "upper garment." It is different from laypeople and heretics, and is a distinguishing mark that evokes the memory of practitioners. Because the teacher allows it as clothing that protects against hot and cold sensations such as mosquitoes, flies, wind, and sun, one should always think of wearing such an upper garment. After saying this, place it on the right shoulder. Hold the lower skirt as before. This garment worn on the lower body is called the "lower skirt." It protects the lower body from nakedness and shame, prevents the touch of mosquitoes, etc., and is different from laypeople and heretics, and is a distinguishing mark. It is the clothing allowed by the teacher that evokes the memory of practitioners, so one should always think of wearing such a lower garment. The teacher also wore such upper and lower garments, studied this path, and attained Buddhahood, and then bestowed such clothing to the followers. Therefore, one must wear such clothing and make the mind gentle and peaceful. After saying this, place it on the right side. Put food into the bowl, holding both hands with the left below and the right above. This is called a "bowl." It is different from the bowls of laypeople, the begging bowls of heretics, and the utensils of other inferior renunciates, and is a special mark. Just as it is filled with food, fill one's own continuum with merit. Just as one enjoys food from this bowl, enjoy the Dharma. The teacher allows it as a vessel for practicing pure alms-seeking, abandoning the two extremes, so one should always think of having such a vessel. Then spread out the mat as before. This is called a "mat." It is different from the white mats of laypeople and the variegated mats of people that have hardly faded. Except for the grass mats of the Sangha, when enjoying a dwelling, one must protect oneself with it in order to enjoy it. Hand over the water strainer. This is called a "water strainer." The Buddha's teachings are thoroughly distinguished by compassion, and the Pratimoksha vows are the abandonment of all harm to others, so one must avoid causing harm to all sentient beings. In particular, water is of great importance and easily causes (harm). Because water is needed day and night, such a water strainer is needed.
