Enter, and place your palms together at your heart. You, or you all, should think like this when taking the vows of a layperson: This kind of body is difficult to obtain and easy to perish, and after death, due to the power of karma, there is no freedom to be reborn wherever one wishes. If one is born in a lower realm, one will experience great suffering, so the refuge that protects us from that is the Three Jewels. Therefore, one must take refuge in the Three Jewels from the depths of one's heart. Here, it is not enough to merely wish to be liberated from the lower realms; one must see the nature of all of samsara as suffering and generate the wish to be liberated from all of samsara. The basis for the arising of vows is pure refuge and the wish to be liberated from samsara. Therefore, these two must be pure, or even if they are artificial, they must be generated. Moreover, one must also wish to attain Buddhahood, so that for the benefit of all sentient beings, one may attain the state of Buddhahood. For this purpose, having taken refuge in the Three Jewels and taken the vows of a layperson who upholds the five precepts, generate a particularly strong wish to keep them well until death. Please repeat after me. Venerable one, please listen. I, named so-and-so, from now until the end of my life, take refuge in the Buddha, the supreme among bipeds. I take refuge in the Dharma, the supreme among those free from desire. I take refuge in the Sangha, the supreme among assemblies. I, until the end of my life, ask the Venerable one to accept me as a layperson. This must be recited three times, so please repeat the second time. After the third time. Here there are three statements: refuge, self, and other. At the same time as the self-statement "as a layperson" is completed, the vows of a layperson will arise in your mindstream. I have become your teacher, so when saying "as a layperson," I will raise my voice slightly and give the signal with the wooden clapper. At that time, it is very important to generate the thought that "this is the moment when the vows of a layperson arise in my mindstream." It is important to know when the vows are received, and because I have become the teacher, one must say, "Please accept me as a layperson." Keep this in mind and then repeat the third time.

Third, after saying that, the Acharya says, "It is a means." And the reply is, "Good." If taking the novice monk vows, then there is no need to recite the precepts here. If only taking the lay vows or anything less than ordination, then it is necessary to recite them. Therefore, reciting the precepts is: By this, one obtains the vows of a layperson. Even if obtained, if not protected, not only will benefits not arise, but faults will arise. Therefore, think that I too will protect them as the previous Arhats protected them. Please imitate this! Acharya, please listen. Just as those noble Arhats abandoned killing and turned away from killing, so too, I, named so-and-so, from this time until the end of my life, abandon killing and turn away from killing. With this first branch, I follow the precepts of those noble Arhats, practice them, and do them. Furthermore, just as those noble Arhats until the end of their lives abandoned taking what is not given, sexual misconduct, lying, and grain alcohol, brewed alcohol, and places of intoxication and carelessness, and turned away from grain alcohol, brewed alcohol, and places of intoxication and carelessness, so too, I, named so-and-so, from this time until the end of my life, abandon taking what is not given, sexual misconduct, lying, and grain alcohol, brewed alcohol, and places of intoxication and carelessness, and turn away from grain alcohol, brewed alcohol, and places of intoxication and carelessness. With this fifth branch, I follow the precepts of those noble Arhats, practice them, and do them. Once is enough. Say "It is a means" and "Good." After taking the lay vows, one must practice the precepts of refuge. Regarding this, even though there are many, if summarized, it is not to prostrate out of faith to worldly gods, to abandon harming sentient beings, and not to befriend those who do not respect the Three Jewels, such as non-Buddhists, these three, and to make offerings to the Three Jewels, and to have compassion for sentient beings.
