Distinguishing and showing separation from emptiness does not arise separately. If these are combined with the Ornament for Clear Realization, they are combined with "The mind of enlightenment is for the sake of others," and so on. In the Extensive and Intermediate Mother Sutras, as the second dharma symbolizing the mind of enlightenment, the words that teach the ten instructions appear separately. Although they do not appear separately in the Eight Thousand Verse Sutra, they are generally spoken of in common. In this Compendium, too, it is generally shown by summarizing it in one verse, such as, "For whom the supreme perfection of wisdom is not apprehended." That is, for the bodhisattva who has generated the mind of enlightenment, the meaning of the supreme perfection of wisdom that is practiced is not apprehended in ultimate truth. The bodhisattva who practices is also not apprehended in ultimate truth. The mind of enlightenment that practices is also not apprehended in ultimate truth, because its nature is emptiness. When these are shown, the bodhisattva who, upon hearing these words, does not have the ignorance of not understanding their meaning and is not afraid, is established as practicing the perfection of wisdom of the Sugata. Here it is shown that the mind of enlightenment that was previously spoken of must be cultivated by being grasped by the wisdom that realizes emptiness. The teacher said that this shows the key instruction for cultivating the mind of enlightenment that has emptiness and compassion as its essence. Then, the third dharma is the path of joining, in the Extensive and Intermediate Mother Sutras, the path of joining, heat, and so on, each of the four is combined with the three, small, intermediate, and large, and each has its own sutra section. In the Eight Thousand Verse Sutra, although they are explained separately, they are also spoken of in a slightly abbreviated way. Here, too, with a few verses such as, "Without form, without feeling, without perception, and without mental activity," the four, heat, and so on, are merely explained separately. If we summarize these words and meanings, then each of the four paths of joining is divided into three, and the object of all of these is the four truths and their sixteen aspects. And their own true nature is the nature of true emptiness. First, the object and aspect of the heat of the path of joining are that the form, feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness of the five aggregates do not exist in ultimate truth. And for the place of consciousness, the object does not exist even as a particle in ultimate truth. The one who abides in heat, that object

Not abiding with attachment to the truth of all dharmas, and not acting in such a way as not to abide, and without holding on to them with attachment to the truth, then the enlightenment of the Tathagatas will be attained. The aspects of the object of the peak of the path of joining are: for example, just as the Tirthika wandering mendicant with rosary beads views (the five aggregates) as self, and knows that he cannot be liberated by his own path alone, and after that enters this doctrine, analyzes and refutes the five aggregates with reason, and truly understands that the aggregates without an object are all destroyed, and arises the wisdom that realizes their non-existence. Likewise, any Bodhisattva who abides on the path of joining, when he knows that all dharmas such as form are truly unattainable by the reason that truly distinguishes, then he is not ignorant of the end of peaceful Nirvana, that is, he does not abide, at that time the Bodhisattva abides in the Prajnaparamita. Again, like this, what is the true nature of this so-called form and this wisdom? Who does this belong to? From what cause did it arise? Like this, with correct reason, he thinks and analyzes that all dharmas such as aggregates are empty in nature. Thus, after closely examining all dharmas, when he sees them as empty, if the Bodhisattva's mind is without cowardice and without fear, then he is close to perfect enlightenment, because he will quickly attain it. The forbearance of the path of joining is: if one does not know that form and so on are empty in truth, and the idea of attachment to the truth arises in form, and one acts with attachment to the truth on the aggregates of feeling, perception, formation, consciousness, then it is not permissible. Even if one thinks and analyzes that these aggregates are empty in truth, the Bodhisattva is still acting on the sign of attachment to reality, so he does not believe in the state of truly non-arising. This shows that not only should one not be attached to reality in the aggregates, but also one should not be attached to reality in the true emptiness of the aggregates. Also, if there is a Bodhisattva who does not think or act on the five aggregates such as form with attachment to reality, and truly does not abide in any object, then nominally it can be said that he acts on true emptiness, but if he does not truly cling to that action, then it is Prajnaparamita.
