Even what the king possesses comes from accumulating merit in many eons. It is not something that falls from the sky or appears suddenly. Is it like that small amount of food and drink that will not be exhausted for eons? O great king, those who wish to maintain a connection between father and son and siblings who have not yet passed away, even if one of them who is still alive and has a body goes to another place, then the father, mother, son, or sibling will give much food and drink to that person. Even if the offering of "Please enjoy" does not appear in the dream of the one who has gone to another place, how can they actually eat and drink? How can those who have passed away and are separated from body and life eat and drink what is offered and entrusted to them? etc. Then the king asked: O Blessed One, if that is the case, then is it meaningless to offer food, drink, vehicles, clothes, and ornaments to the deceased to benefit them? The Blessed One replied: O great king, when the deceased takes rebirth in any of the different realms of beings according to the maturation of their karma, if various virtuous deeds that are not separate from non-virtue and have become a collection of merit are dedicated to them, they will rise to higher realms and liberation. If one has already taken rebirth, then dedicating virtuous deeds that have become merit to that rebirth will bring benefits such as finding wealth, good harvests, increasing desired enjoyments, and being worshiped and honored by all other beings. However, if the deceased has not taken rebirth and remains in the world of the dead, then they do not own food, drink, vehicles, clothes, and ornaments. Therefore, it is said. The Kalachakra Tantra also says: Whatever good deeds are done by relatives and friends who remain behind for the sake of the deceased, their maturation is like a calf following its mother. Wherever the deceased is, it will follow them. The Blessed One explained the manner of death and transmigration as mentioned above. At that time, the Shakyas, including Devadatta, collected various grains from each household, wrote "This belongs to so-and-so" on them, and put them in bags, which became as heavy as an elephant's load. Similarly, the ashes of various trees burned in the forest were placed separately in bags with names written on them.

Then, secretly taking the elephant's excrement, they presented it to the Teacher, reporting, "Please, without opening these bundles of grain that belong to so-and-so, and these ashes that are from the trees of so-and-so, prophesy truthfully. And please confirm that what you say about how the transference of death occurs is true, otherwise everyone will not believe." The Teacher, without opening those things, truthfully said one by one, "These grains are from the Shakya clan of so-and-so, and these are the ashes from burning the trees of so-and-so." The Teacher spoke truthfully about everything without any error. After that, the king and all the people unanimously agreed that the transference of death as spoken by the Buddha was exactly like that. Also, in the Great Commentary, it says, "The attachment to the seven junctures, that is, the juncture and combination of seven weeks. If the cause for rebirth is found after the end of life, then one is born immediately. If it is not found, the lifespan of the bardo is seven days, so one transfers death after seven days. If the cause for rebirth is not found, then one also transfers death in seven weeks and remains in the bardo. After that, one takes rebirth in any way." Also, in the Vinaya Source, it says, "Because the assembly of causes is not found, in existence, one remains in the bardo existence for seven days." Therefore, it is said. Also, in the Treasury of Knowledge, it says, "The irreversible one is the Gandharva." This means that once the intermediate state of any being is established, it will not regress to another realm. However, according to the Mahayana view, the intermediate state can change. In the Great Commentary, it says, "At the juncture of death after seven days, the intermediate state that was originally of hell will later change to a good realm. In the Earth Chapter, it says that one who transfers death after seven days will either manifest and accomplish there, or it will be another unequal one. If the actions of other karmas completely change, then it will cause the seed of the intermediate state of existence to completely change." This means that for a certain sinner, the intermediate state of a bad realm has been established, and one should be born there, but because of the power of relatives and others doing virtuous deeds, the intermediate state of the bad realm changes, and the intermediate state of the good realm of gods and humans is established, and thus one is reborn in a good realm. Also, in that same text, it says that the reason for doing seven weeks is to benefit the intermediate state, in general
