There are two types of quantity: the application that definitely generates the basis of defeat and remainder, and the application that does not necessarily generate the basis of either. The first exists because the gross aspects of the application of defeat and remainder are placed there. The second exists because the gross aspects of the form of the application of defeat and remainder are placed there. When one intends to kill a person but misunderstands and stabs and kills a domestic animal, there arises something like the form of the application and the form of the basis at the time of killing. At that time, because a person is not killed but a domestic animal is killed. At that time, the basis changes, because although one thinks one has killed a person, one has not killed a person but has killed another. Some say that it should not be called the form of the basis, because the form of the basis is used only for cases where one steals an object of complete value for the sake of another, and it is only the basis that is incomplete. In general, there are four ways to become faultless: when there is no basis for transgression, it is said to be faultless; when there is no transgression related to the occasion, it is done; when there is faultlessness in the classification of transgressions, it is done there; and when there is no transgression at all, it is done there. The first exists because it is said to be faultless when the application is interrupted and one steals small amounts many times during the interruption, like that. The second exists because it is said to be faultless when one takes more than three begging bowls when it is said that one should not take more, like that. The third exists because it is said to be faultless when one kills some without the intention to kill, like that. There are two types of the fourth: both the enacted and the self-existing, and the common faultlessness. The first exists because transgression does not occur in things like consciousness not abiding in its own nature. The second has four types: faultlessness without an object of negation, faultlessness related to carelessness, faultlessness due to obstacles, and faultlessness that cannot be accomplished. The first exists because it is said to be faultless when one digs only sand, like that. The second exists because it is said that there are no three transgressions of holding, separating, and placing when laying down a hard object, like that. The third exists because life

Because if one encounters obstacles, it is like saying there is no transgression if one does not protect other precepts besides the prescribed ones. Fourthly, there is, just as it is said that there is no transgression for a sick bhikṣu to eat afternoon food. Furthermore, there are cases where it is said there is no transgression; if one engages in honest trade for the sake of abandoning ungiven taking, it is said there is no transgression, and if realization increases in a secluded place, there is no transgression for taking what is not given, etc. If there is a special need, there is no transgression for touching jewels and fire, etc., and for making vocal sounds, as it is said. So, if the prescribed and self-nature precepts contradict each other, what should be done? There is; if the two contradict each other, one must abandon the prescribed precepts except for alcohol. If the prescribed precepts contradict each other, there are differences between what should be prohibited and what is needed, and there is also allowing the small for the sake of the large, and allowing the large for the sake of the need. The size of what should be prohibited and the size of the prescribed precepts are not necessarily related, because there are cases where what should be prohibited is large but the prescribed precept is small, and where the prescribed precept is large but what should be prohibited is small. The first case is established, because although there is an unforgivable thing that should be prohibited, such as drawing blood from the Tathāgata with malicious intent, it is said that the prescribed precept is to generate no other transgression than defeat. The latter case is established, because even if a sick bhikṣu drinking alcohol is prescribed to generate a transgression, if it is certain to benefit the illness, the thing that should be prohibited is small for drinking just a little. Secondly, in the summary of the remaining offenses, it says: Emission of semen and sexual speech, flattery and praise, houses and mansions, and the unfounded, a little sangha division and following, defaming families and unpleasantness. As it is said, there are thirteen remaining offenses, the first is the remaining offense of emitting semen, if a bhikṣu who possesses precepts, with his mind naturally abiding, relies on a part of the body other than any of the three doors of himself or others, and consciously emits semen, then that offense is generated. The second is the sangha remaining offense of touching, if a bhikṣu consciously, with a mind of desire, completely accepts, touches the actual body of a woman or hair and clothes, etc., related to it, and possesses the pleasure of touching, then that offense is generated. The third is the remaining offense of speaking sexual speech, if a bhikṣu with a mind of desire
