Thus, one thousand is a small chiliocosm. Such a billion chiliocosms are a boundless connection. Those billions of kotis are one boundless continuum. Those billions of kotis are one intermediate boundless continuum. Those billions of kotis are one boundless ocean, which is said to be from the vast arrangement of one of the enjoyment body realms adorned with the fundamental heart flower. Thus, in explaining the twelve deeds, there are two types: a summary and an elaboration. The first is: descending, entering the womb, being born, enjoying the company of consorts, being skilled in crafts, renouncing, practicing austerities, going to the Bodhi tree, defeating the Maras, attaining complete enlightenment, turning the wheel of Dharma, and demonstrating passing into Nirvana. If it is thought that since the words of Maitreya say, "Manifest birth," then should manifest birth be guided first? There is no fault, although there is a way to guide it as twelve, but it is not necessary to guide it here, because it is only said to show the basis for the arising of deeds such as descending. If that is guided, there will be faults such as exceeding twelve. Secondly, explaining each separately, the first of the twelve, the deed of descending, is that the noble White Banner himself, while teaching Dharma to the gods of Tushita and residing there, in the celestial music of the blessings of the Buddhas, it is said: "Vast merit, great accumulation, much remembrance, boundless wisdom, illuminating light, unequaled power, possessing vast illusion, please remember the prophecy of Dipamkara." Based on this exhortation, from Tushita to the Jambudvipa continent, the royal lineage, the Ikshvaku clan, the mother Maya, at the time when the five degenerations were rampant, he contemplated the five degenerations and thought of descending. The five degenerations are the degeneration of time, the degeneration of lifespan, the degeneration of views, the degeneration of afflictions, and the degeneration of beings. At that time, the gods said that now in Jambudvipa, there are six non-Buddhist teachers such as Purna, six followers of Brahmanas such as cause and effect, and six samapattis such as the son of stiffening, who have made the minds of sentient beings unpleasant.
