Furthermore, in the Holy Dharma White Lotus Sutra, it says: Who will make offerings to the relics of those victorious ones who have passed away? Whoever makes countless stupas of relics with gold, silver, or glass, or with stupas of Vajragarbha, or with excellent lapis lazuli, or similarly with indranila, or some make stupas with pearls, kakeru, those too will attain enlightenment. Whoever makes stupas of stone, whoever makes stupas of agaru or sandalwood, whoever makes stupas of birch bark, or some make them of wood or other materials, or build them with earth or bricks, happily making stupas of the victorious ones, therefore, even from piles of earth, in desolate wildernesses, or for the sake of children's games, whoever makes stupas for the victorious ones, even if they are made of piles of sand, those too will attain enlightenment. Also, some make precious images, images endowed with the thirty-two marks, whoever makes them for that reason, all of those will attain enlightenment. Also, some with the seven precious things, or some similarly with copper and staffs, make images of the Sugatas, all of those will attain enlightenment. Even with lead, iron, or earth, having made images of the Sugatas, making them beautiful to look at and employing people to do clay work, all of those will attain enlightenment. Whoever draws images of the Buddha on walls, bodies fully endowed with the marks of accumulating merit, whether they draw them themselves or employ others to draw them, all of those will attain enlightenment. Whether they are men or youths, whoever among them, while learning, while playing games or making new things, draws images with fingernails or sticks on walls, all of those will attain enlightenment, all of those will become meaningful, all will also liberate billions of beings, and correctly establish many bodhisattvas. The sound of cymbals, the music of conch shells and great drums resound, for the sake of offering to the supreme Bodhi. Whoever strikes various drums, as well as instruments like the lute, along with clappers and hand drums, pottery drums, single-stringed zithers, pleasing flutes, and the Akoṇāda that emits exceedingly melodious sounds, all of these will attain Bodhi. Whoever strikes iron bells and rattles, casts them into water, claps their hands, sings pleasing and melodious songs, and makes offerings to relics in various ways, all of these will become Buddhas in the world. For the relics of the Sugata, even if the sound of a single bell is made, or if offering is made with just a single flower, or if the image of the Sugata is drawn on a wall, even if offering is made with a distracted mind, they will gradually see countless Buddhas. Regarding a stupa, whoever joins their palms, whether it is a complete joining of the palms, or merely bows their head for a moment, or similarly, bends their body once, for those places where relics reside, even if with a distracted mind they say, "I prostrate to the Buddha," even if they say just one such word, repeating it several times, all of these will attain this supreme Bodhi. Thus, and so forth, it is said. In the Sutra of Dedicating Roots of Virtue, it says: Furthermore, in order to swiftly attain clairvoyance, one should diligently make offerings to the stupa of the Tathagata, repair it, and clean it. O Steadfast Intelligence, for a son or daughter of good family who cleans the stupa of the Tathagata, they will obtain four pure and supreme aspirations. What are the four? A pure and supreme aspiration for a beautiful form, leisure and endowments, complete acceptance and steadfastness, and a pure and supreme aspiration to see the Tathagata. In the chapter on the Image of the Tathagata's Body, it says: On earth, lime, wood, stone, bone, iron, clay, gold, silver, beryl, crystal, red pearl, essence of stone, coral, conch shell, agate, incense, cloth, wooden board, or wall, one should construct the image of the Tathagata's body. By doing so, if one makes an image of the Tathagata, one will not be born into low castes, castes that commit evil deeds, or castes with wrong views, and one will not be deficient in any limbs. If one has already committed the five inexpiable sins, but gains faith in the Tathagata and makes an image, then through that action, sentient beings will experience minor hells and will definitely be liberated through any of the three vehicles. For example, if a person is touched by something impure, thoroughly washes it clean, and then anoints it with incense, the unpleasant odor will disappear. Similarly, the sin of committing the five inexpiable sins will disappear. Even if one possesses the path of the ten non-virtuous actions, if one gains faith in the Tathagata and makes an image of him, then his sin will be like butter consumed by a fire, so that even the smoke is not visible; similarly, his sin will also disappear. As it says in the "Question of King Clear Light": "Here, making an image of the Victorious One, endowed with form and auspicious qualities, is like hidden senses and the light of the sun; if seen by all beings in the world, it will bring joy." And: "The stupas and images of the Blessed One, however many dust particles there are on them, one will certainly obtain that many kingdoms, in the heavenly realms, on earth, and among humans." And: "Building an image of the Sugata, his body will be immaculate, free from disease, destruction, sorrow, and suffering, and will become soft and expansive like a lotus." And: "Here, whoever makes an image of the Victorious One will not become a slave, will not be of a poor nature, will not be a servant, will not be born into a low caste, will not be deficient in faculties, but will become a supreme being." And, as quoted from the Sutra of Avalokiteshvara: "If one makes a very beautiful image of Avalokiteshvara, then he is supreme, worthy of worship by many people. He is intelligent, wealthy, has a long life, is powerful, and becomes a Chakravartin king." The benefits of building stupas are also included in these.
