By familiarizing the mind, the appearances of this life are reversed. The sufferings of samsara, where karmic results are unfailing, if repeatedly contemplated, the appearances of future lives are reversed. By becoming accustomed in this way, not even for a moment will longing arise for the prosperity of existence. If day and night, a mind seeking liberation constantly arises, then at that time, genuine renunciation is born. As it is said, merely remembering the pleasures and wealth of existence effortlessly gives rise to renunciation, then even if one is of the Hearer or Solitary Realizer lineage, one has grasped the beginning of the path. If one is of the Great Vehicle lineage, merely remembering the suffering of sentient beings brings forth the experience of engaging in the conduct of a Bodhisattva continuously, then one establishes the accumulation path of the Great Vehicle as small. That is, by constantly relying on the recollection of seeing the faults and suffering of samsara and the benefits of liberation, without entrusting the mind to appearances, but rather exposing the flaws of existence, that is, recognizing and preventing them, and by familiarizing oneself with the object-aspect of holding the mind on the benefits of liberation, one must bring forth the experience of renunciation. If one does not bring forth experience, no matter what virtuous roots one familiarizes oneself with, from generosity to meditative absorption, they will never become a cause for liberation. Therefore, for those to be trained who desire liberation, at the beginning of practice, setting aside for a while all other so-called profound instructions such as mantras, one should engage in analytical meditation on renunciation, that is, engaging in investigative meditation. As it is said. Here, a brief explanation of the characteristics of renunciation, in two parts: the main subject and the clearing of doubts. Firstly, here, the term "renunciation" refers to the mind of renunciation. Genuine renunciation is liberation, as it is said in the Root Text of the Sutras: "Having renunciation as the freedom of discipline," therefore it is explained in this way in the root commentary. Among these, there are two types: the superior and the ordinary, both of which arise by focusing on the truth of suffering. As it is said in the Practice Song: "If you do not strive to contemplate the faults of the truth of suffering, then the mind seeking liberation will not arise as it is." And it is similarly explained in the Great and Small Stages of the Path. That is, one must generate the intention to be liberated from samsara in general, by way of preventing both the manifest appearances of this life and the appearances of future lives. Because merely desiring to be liberated from the suffering of the lower realms, although it is a cause for generating renunciation, it is not a complete characteristic of the mind of renunciation, because merely

Excessive craving for pleasure is also a cause of being bound in samsara. As it is said in the Lamrim, "Craving for worldly existence also binds all sentient beings." Therefore, contemplating the suffering of happy migrations as explained in the context of the middling person is a special means of generating renunciation. As it is said in the Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path, "Liberation means freedom from bondage. Karma and afflictions are the factors that bind one in samsara. Under the influence of these two, in terms of realms, there are the three realms such as the desire realm; in terms of destinies, there are the five or six destinies such as the gods; and in terms of birth-places, there are the four births such as womb-birth. The very connection of aggregates is the nature of bondage, and liberation from that is liberation. Wanting to attain that is the mind that seeks liberation." From "There are two methods for generating the mind that seeks liberation: contemplating from the perspective of suffering and its origin, and contemplating from the perspective of the twelve links of dependent arising," after briefly indicating, it is explained in detail. First, there are methods for contemplating the eight sufferings, six sufferings, and three sufferings, and a detailed explanation of the classification of the ten non-virtuous actions and root afflictions in the origin of suffering. Then, the classification of the twelve links of dependent arising is also explained in detail. The practice of dependent arising is also included in the practice of suffering and its origin. As it is said, "The first, eighth, and ninth are afflictions, the second and tenth are karma, the remaining seven are of the nature of suffering." Therefore, it should be understood that the classification of the four noble truths made by the Bhagavan is a summary and presentation of the essence of the path to liberation from samsara. Wanting to be liberated from samsara, the mind that seeks liberation, and the mind of renunciation are all different names. As for the standard for generating these minds, as it is said in the Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path, "The standard for generating that mind is that, after thoroughly understanding the characteristics of samsara through the two truths of suffering and origin and the twelve links of dependent arising, wanting to abandon them and wanting to attain their pacification, merely generating such a thought is the mind of renunciation." Just as it is said. Second, if asked: Then what does it mean when the Lamrim says, "Day and night, constantly seeking the mind of liberation"? There is no fault, because it is the beginning of the path.
