Commentary on the Answers Given to Redawa After Je Tsongkhapa Inquired of Manjushri. Commentary on the Answers Given to Redawa After Je Tsongkhapa Inquired of Manjushri. Commentary on the Answers Given to Redawa After Je Tsongkhapa Inquired of Manjushri. Namo Guru Manjughoshaya (藏文,梵文天城体,guru mañjughoṣāya,Homage to the Guru Manjughosha). Having directly seen the profound dependent origination as it is, For the sake of properly showing it to others, possessing knowledge, And speech that is supremely renowned, I prostrate with my head to the lotus feet of that supreme teacher. Manjushri, the embodiment of all Buddhas' wisdom, Nagarjuna and Aryadeva who explain the profound meaning, Shantideva and the accomplished master Buddhapalita, Chandrakirti and others, along with the lineage, I pay homage. With the clear sunlight of his intellect, Having destroyed the darkness of delusion in the sky of profound meaning, Making the thousand-petaled lotus of emptiness bloom, I prostrate to Jetsun, renowned as the Second Conqueror. With the strength of intellect at the pinnacle of the excellent mansion Of the white parasol of that protector's teaching, the doctrine of the Able One, Raising and upholding it, the Regent Khedrup Je, The earlier and later Panchen Gyalwang, I praise. Those who, having gained faith in the excellent teachings of the father-lord lama, Desire to understand the profound meaning, From being urged by the speech of pure intention, I feel a slight joy in explaining this manner. In your letter, it says, "Please make and send a detailed and clear explanation of the answers given to Redawa after the precious master inquired of Manjushri." This answer comes from the scattered writings of Je Tsongkhapa, concerning the questions and answers on the three principal aspects of the path, and at the end, there is also a way to practice. Although it is not clear which of these two it is, I will base my answer primarily on the former. Here, the main focus seems to be on questioning and answering the practice of renunciation, bodhicitta, and view, and I will provide explanations of the words. Some are like extended meanings or incidental mentions, and because they are easy to understand, I do not think it is necessary to provide complete explanations of the words, so I will explain in the manner of summarizing the meaning. This text is a compilation of the meanings that were later recorded after many questions and answers were asked of Jetsun. It seems to be a mixture of the words of Jetsun and Je Tsongkhapa. The beginning of this text was transferred from the example of Lama Tharsang.

As it says at the end, "from there, it does not exist." Following that, generally, emptiness eliminates the extreme of existence, and appearance eliminates the extreme of non-existence, which is common between this and the Cārvākas, for this statement, there are two points: briefly revealing the extreme, and explaining it separately. First, in general, the word "extreme," in the Commentary on Valid Cognition, it says, "Extreme is exhaustion, termination, proximity, and disparagement." And, in the commentary on the Compendium Sutra, it says that the word "extreme," Sanskrit (Devanagari: कोटि, Romanization: koṭi, Literal meaning: corner), also applies to doors and apexes, as explained, it applies to many meanings. And the extreme of "freedom from extremes," as it appears in the commentary on the Root Wisdom, also applies to explanation. Therefore, the extreme here is the place of falling, just as the world says that a cliff is an extreme, and falling from it is said to be falling from an extreme, grasping anything, the grasper will be destroyed, therefore it is called falling into an extreme. Second, like this, the name of the word "extreme" is the same, but the meaning is different, therefore other schools and the four tenets of our own school will have different understandings of the extreme. Like this, other schools prevent the uncommon views of our own school, and our own school also prevents the uncommon views of other schools. Other schools prevent the selflessness of persons that our own school acknowledges. The Vaibhāṣikas prevent the permanent self that other schools acknowledge. The permanent substance acknowledged by the Vaibhāṣikas is prevented by the Sautrāntikas. The coarse external objects acknowledged by the Sautrāntikas are prevented by the Mind-Only school. The truly established knowledge acknowledged by the Mind-Only school is prevented by the Madhyamikas. The Svātantrikas and below, acknowledging establishment by their own characteristics, are prevented by the Prāsaṅgikas, like this. Therefore, the views of appearance and emptiness and the views of eliminating extremes are also different. However, if only what is commonly acknowledged is indicated, then based on whatever is the focus of the dispute, appearance exists, is established by valid cognition, is permanent or impermanent, and from signs of seeing and hearing, etc., eliminating the opposite side of non-existence and non-establishment, etc., or the extreme. Similarly, through signs of emptiness not existing and not being established, etc., eliminating the opposite side of existence and being established by valid cognition, etc., or the extreme. The Cārvākas, in their own treatises, say, "Whatever is the object of the senses, the person is limited to that alone." As it says, a lifetime
