As it is said, by ascertaining the emptiness of no self-nature in which the object of clinging, even a particle, is not established, one is liberated from the extreme of permanence. Secondly, if, as previously explained, all four tenets appear and there are ways to prevent the extreme of existence by appearance and the extreme of non-existence by emptiness, then how can this be said to be a characteristic of the Consequentialist? Some scholars understand it according to the literal meaning, but temporarily acknowledging the previous view, it should be done as follows: In this Consequentialist tenet that considers all phenomena to be empty of self-nature, there is a special method of eliminating the extreme of existence by appearance and the extreme of non-existence by emptiness, which does not occur in the tenets below the Autonomist, so it becomes a characteristic of this tenet. How is it understood? The method of eliminating the two extremes based on a single formulation that establishes no self-nature by the reason of dependent arising is: In the collected works of Je Gedun Gyatso, it says: "Here, I will briefly explain the uncommon characteristic of the Consequentialist, which is the meaning of eliminating the extreme of existence by appearance and the extreme of non-existence by emptiness. Sprout, the subject, is empty of self-nature, because it is dependent arising. When this is established as the reason, instead of saying sprout, the subject, does not exist, the difference of what is to be refuted is added, saying it is empty of self-nature, therefore it can be understood that the sprout is empty of self-nature, but it is not completely non-existent, so this is the meaning of eliminating the extreme of non-existence by emptiness. Because it is dependent arising, this reason can be understood that the sprout is established depending on or relying on its own causes and conditions. If it were established by self-nature, it would not need to rely on causes and conditions, therefore it is known to be empty of self-nature. This is the meaning of eliminating the extreme of existence by appearance. Therefore, the function of the reason of dependent arising can simultaneously prevent the two extremes of permanence and annihilation, so it is also called the king of reasoning, dependent arising." In the commentary on the Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness by Je Tsongkhapa, it also says: "This is also, sprout, the subject, is empty of self-nature, because it is dependent arising. When this is established as the reason, the established phenomenon enters the mind, so it can eliminate the extreme of permanence that clings to self-existence. Because it is dependent arising, this reason enters the mind, so it can be understood that the sprout is only a dependent arising in name, therefore, it is not completely non-existent.

By severing the extremes of permanence and annihilation, both the extreme of permanence and the extreme of annihilation are simultaneously severed. Furthermore, since a sprout is determined to be a dependent arising that is merely a name, through ascertainment, it generates ascertainment of its lack of inherent existence, thereby appearance severs the extreme of existence. On the premise that a sprout is determined to be without inherent existence, it arises from its own seed, and all the establishments of terms such as not arising from a causeless cause and a dissimilar cause are reasonable. By generating ascertainment towards the aspect of appearance, emptiness severs the extreme of non-existence, hence it is called the King of Reasoning. Thus, two methods are explained. Moreover, in the commentary on the "Praise of Dependent Arising" composed by him, it says: Generally speaking, merely severing the extreme of existence through emptiness and severing the extreme of non-existence through appearance is common to all higher and lower schools, including the materialists. Therefore, in the view of the Prasangikas, contrary to this, appearance severs the extreme of existence, and emptiness severs the extreme of non-existence. From "because it is dependent arising, it is necessary to generate ascertainment of emptiness of inherent existence" to "similarly, it is also necessary to generate ascertainment of dependent arising through the reason of emptiness of inherent existence," as explained. If it were only for summarizing and making it easy to understand, then these would be sufficient. But because it is said to be more detailed, it will be explained by combining the meaning and expanding it slightly. The scriptures that show how to sever the extremes in this way are: In the Root Wisdom, it says, "Because of dependent arising, it is said to be emptiness." and so on, and "If one has emptiness, one has everything." and so on. In the "Praise of Dependent Arising," it says, "Whatever depends on conditions, that is empty of inherent existence." and "Therefore, apart from dependent arising, there is no dharma that can destroy existence, therefore you said it first." and so on, there are many. Khedrup Norzang Gyatso has two explanations for the way to sever the two extremes: the time when the understanding of the Prasangika view is exhausted, and the time when pure experience arises. The first is: From his words, it can be known that if all dharmas are measured in five ways, that is, one's own cause or basis, they are not found, therefore, from the object, there is not even a little bit of something established by its own nature, but it is merely a designation established relying on one's own causes and conditions or basis, this is the dependent arising of the Prasangika school.
