Just like a reflection in water. The image of a face appears in the face, just as the nature of the face is empty. For the consciousness of ordinary beings, all appearances such as cause and effect seem to be self-established. To say that all aspects of appearance are empty of self-establishment is a way of refuting from the subtle object of refutation. The Svatantrika school believes that the root consciousness of ordinary beings, for the five objects such as form, appears to be established by its own nature, and as it appears, it becomes a valid cognition for the self-characteristics of the five objects. Therefore, they believe that appearances such as form and sound, which are not like reflections, are established as they appear, which is conventional truth. But for the Prasangika school, the direct perception of the root consciousness of ordinary beings is mistaken about the self-characteristics of the five objects, so it does not become a valid cognition for the self-characteristics of the five objects, and the appearance is not established as it appears. As it is said in the Lamrim, and also in the Great Lamrim: Before finding the view of no self-nature, it is impossible to distinguish between the mere existence of those people and the existence established by their own characteristics. From this, it can also be understood. Therefore, Panchen Lama said in the commentary on Mahamudra: How our ordinary minds appear is said to be the object of refutation as the subject. Some other wise people also think so, and I think it is reasonable. However, mere appearance is not the object of refutation as the subject, but what is established as it appears is considered to be the object of refutation of the true subject. Furthermore, to understand well how emptiness becomes cause and effect depends on understanding how emptiness becomes the meaning of dependent arising. And that is what was said above. Other scriptures that explain that emptiness of self-nature is the meaning of dependent arising are, in the Sutra Requested by Maitreya, it says: Whatever is born from conditions is unborn. There is no self-nature of birth in it. Whatever depends on conditions is said to be empty. Whoever knows emptiness is a cautious person. And, its meaning is: Whatever depends on conditions is empty of self-nature. It explains it this way. The venerable Nagarjuna said in the Root Wisdom: Whatever is dependent arising is inherently peaceful. And, in the Refutation of Disputes, it says: Whatever is emptiness, dependent arising, and the Middle Way, the meanings are the same. In the Praise of Transcendence, it also says: Whatever arises dependently,

It says, "You consider emptiness." The Four Hundred Verses states, "That which arises in dependence on something is not independent." Its commentary states, "Because dependent arising is devoid of the nature of independence, the meaning of being devoid of the nature of independence is the meaning of emptiness." The Great Garland of the Path states, "Wise ones, the meaning of emptiness of inherent existence is the meaning of dependent arising." The Clear Words also explains it in the same way. Je Norzang Gyatso also said, "The meaning of the emptiness of inherent existence of phenomena is that phenomena, from the perspective of their location, do not exist even to the extent of a particle, but are merely imputed and established by name or conceptualization. These two meanings are the same. That is, 'Whatever is dependently arisen is explained as emptiness.' This means that dependent arising and emptiness have the same meaning." Therefore, why doesn't the person who recognizes a sprout as merely a name imputed in dependence recognize that the sprout lacks inherent existence? Even though the mind in that person's continuum that believes that the sprout lacks inherent existence does not have the way of apprehending that the sprout is merely imputed, and the mind that apprehends it as merely imputed does not have the way of apprehending that it lacks inherent existence, nevertheless, the person's mere recognition that the sprout is a mere name imputed leads to the recognition that the sprout lacks inherent existence. And so on, it is explained with examples, and it is of great importance. Furthermore, Je Rinpoche said in the Great Commentary on the Root Wisdom, "That which is born from conditions is unborn." And so on, whatever meaning depends on conditions is devoid of inherent existence that can stand on its own, which is explained as the meaning of emptiness. Therefore, whatever is the meaning of the term 'dependent arising' is the meaning of emptiness of inherent existence. If it is said that the meaning of emptiness of establishment by inherent existence is the meaning of dependent arising, and so much has been said, then, posing the question, what is the meaning of this? The answer is: Emptiness becoming the meaning of dependent arising is for the Madhyamikas because establishment by inherent existence is refuted by valid cognition, but not for others. For such Madhyamikas, when external and internal phenomena are actually ascertained as dependent arising that relies on causes, by the power of that very wisdom,
