When experience arises regarding the way children appear and their previous ways of remembering, then whatever appearances arise later, one will think that appearances are not established as they appear; this is the way of appearance like an illusion through the power of experience. Like that, one must cross to the other side of the ocean of the bodhisattva's conduct through practice combined with meditative equipoise like the sky and subsequent attainment like an illusion. As it is said in the Condensed Meaning of the Stages of the Path: "Meditative equipoise, emptiness like the sky, and subsequent attainment, the two emptinesses like an illusion, having meditated, with the union of skillful means and wisdom, it is praised to go to the other shore of the bodhisattva's conduct." Therefore, some of the present-day instruction-followers, according to their wishes, leave the mind without thinking of anything, and then, with the view, establish that reality has no place to apply terms, and mix the two. When cultivating, they do not keep anything in mind, but just leave the mind blank. Jetsun said that with this, it is impossible to have experience in higher seeing, except for just the abiding of the mind. Jetsun said that if one does not do analytical meditation as explained in the Mahayana sutras, one will not gain experience in the view of realizing emptiness, so one must do analytical meditation. Analytical meditation, as explained before, is meditating after analyzing in between, and not just constantly thinking like some people. It is also not cultivating the view without seeking the abiding aspect. Therefore, Jetsun said that the way of cultivating abiding of the present-day great meditators, not thinking of anything as explained before, is definitely not the real essence of the path of view. These words, as spoken like that, are very much in agreement with our Jetsunpa, and just mentioning them slightly will cause those with firm conviction to have certainty. In my mind, as for the Consequentialist school, I think that meditating on reality and meditating on the view are not different, so it is okay. But as for the Autonomist school, I asked Jetsun, thinking that there is no place to have an essential way of meditating on the view of emptiness. Jetsun said: Yes, it seems that there is indeed no real essential way of meditating on the view of emptiness for those below the Autonomist school. Because according to the Consequentialist, those below the Autonomist do not realize emptiness, because they assert that things are established by their own nature. As long as they do not abandon that tenet of asserting that things are established by their own nature, they cannot

Because there is no place to realize it. Because until the view of realizing the lack of inherent existence of phenomena according to the tradition of Lord Nagarjuna is not found, there is no view that becomes the main method for attaining peaceful nirvana. As it is said in the Madhyamakavatara: 'From the path of Teacher Nagarjuna, there is no method of pacification for outsiders.' Therefore, although they accept the view of realizing selflessness, it is not necessary to accept the realization of subtle selflessness. Even the Prasangika school believes that if one meditates on emptiness only in that way, it will become merely cultivating shamatha or mind-abiding focused on emptiness. For vipassana, one must definitely engage in analytical meditation, as Jetsun said. The term 'mind-abiding' that appears frequently in these instances refers to shamatha. Moreover, in general, shamatha and vipassana, each with their respective objects of focus on the 'as many as' (phenomena), and the union of the two, are not only present on the path of accumulation but also among those who have not entered the path and among outsiders. However, vipassana that focuses on the 'as it is' (reality) is attained from the path of preparation; those who have not attained it do not have it, as explained in the Ornament for the Essence of Commentary. The methods for accomplishing shamatha include the nine mental abidings, the six powers, and the four types of attention. The first nine are: placement, continuous placement, replacement, close placement, taming, pacifying, complete pacifying, single-pointedness, and equanimity. The second six are: the power of hearing, the power of thinking, the power of mindfulness, the power of awareness, the power of effort, and the power of familiarity. The third four are: forceful engagement, interrupted engagement, uninterrupted engagement, and effortless engagement. A detailed explanation of shamatha and vipassana is found in the Lamrim (Stages of the Path), so I will refrain from elaborating here. In short, those who meditate without paying attention to anything think that emptiness, which is not the reality of phenomena, and not grasping anything with the mind, are in agreement. Furthermore, they take as a basis for error the many instances in sutras and tantras where it is said that 'not meditating on anything is meditating on reality,' and mistakenly believe that not paying attention to anything, merely the meditation of stopping conceptual thought, is meditating on reality. Such an assertion is completely unreasonable.
