I, as many such as Gedun Gyatso believe. When any of the phenomena such as form are examined and sought with accurate reasoning that examines the ultimate truth, the object of examination is not found. Not finding it means not finding that form and so on are truly established. Moreover, form and so on are not found either. However, it is not the case that form and so on are found to be non-existent. Just as the image in a mirror is empty of essence in all respects, so too, if form and so on are examined with reasoning that examines the ultimate truth, it will definitely appear to be empty of inherent existence, as it appears in all respects, and thus it will go completely into emptiness. At that time, the thought arises that there is nothing left, and thus there is a place where great fear arises. This is the way to cultivate equanimity like the sky. Then, wondering what is left, when looking, in the post-meditation, it is seen that form and so on are just illusions, or just names, or just designations and conventions that remain. As it is said in the commentary on the Four Hundred: "Therefore, when it is completely examined in this way, the nature of things will not be established, so for each thing, that which is like an illusion will remain as a remainder." The example of illusion is used, as it is said in the Lamrim: "For example, the appearance of illusory horses and cattle is seen by the eye consciousness, and based on the mind consciousness determining that there are no horses and cattle as they appear, the determination arises that the appearance of horses and cattle is like an illusory false appearance. Similarly, based on the fact that persons and so on appear unmistakably to the conventional consciousness, and that the same is determined by reasoning to be empty of inherent existence, which is established by its own entity, the determination arises that the person is an illusion or a false appearance." Similarly, all other phenomena can be applied in the same way. As it is said in the Praise: "Since by nature it is primordially separate, but appears there, all this is said to be like an illusion." Therefore, this is how it appears like an illusion by the power of reasoning. After certainty is drawn to the absence of inherent existence, for the sense consciousnesses and the mind consciousness, all object appearances are clear, round, and bright, and as soon as the appearance arises, the memory consciousness thinks that it is not established in that way, this is how it appears like an illusion by the power of memory.
