Now, the abode of the pretas exists. The root of the abode is that five hundred yojanas below this Jambudvipa, there is a yellow city of pretas called Serkya. It is not definite that it is only there, some pretas and, the abodes of the near border hells, are also on the seashore and in the human realm. The king of Yama of the pretas and hells, there are two ways of thinking, one is to consider them as persons and of the same essence, and the other is not to consider them as persons. Regarding the appearance of Yama's form, such as the one who draws black lines, there are two views: the Vaibhashikas consider them as persons, while the Sutrantikas and Madhyamika-Yogacaras consider them as differences in the four great elements. The abode of animals exists, although they exist in plains, waters, and skies, etc., the root abode is the great ocean itself. The abode of the asuras exists, mainly residing in the hollows below the water's edge of Mount Meru, and scattered ones also exist in other places. The first point is established, that in the hollows below the water's edge, first is the lord of the asuras, Rahu, with his retinue, then below is Neck Garland, then Firm, then Good Thread Circle with his retinue, as stated in the Abhidharmakosha. The asuras also have differences in their equipment, like the thirty-three gods have, each has a corresponding substitute. For example, the gods' elephants are used on the battlefield, while the asuras have unbearable elephants. Therefore, they can compete with the thirty-three gods, but the gods have greater merit and power. Fourth, regarding the manner of the sun and moon rising, there are two aspects: substance and seasons. The first is: the sun and moon are halfway up Mount Meru. Together with fifty-one yojanas. Midnight, the sun sets, and the time when the sun rises halfway is the same. It is said in the scriptures. The sun and moon, you two, from where do you have the manner of rising? From halfway above the water's edge of Mount Meru, rising from the same height as the top of Yoke-Holder Mountain. Relying on what as a basis do they rise? Relying on the power of sentient beings' karma, rising by the wind force of self-establishing and propelling. The winds that propel the sun, moon, and stars have differences in speed, the stars, sun, and moon...

Because of this, the former is fast and the latter is slow. The two periods of the sun's north-south movement are not equal in height, because it is high when moving north and lower than that when moving south. In general, the saying that the sun and moon appear equal to the top of the yoke-holder is true for seasons like spring and autumn. However, at that time, they are not directly above the top of the yoke-holder, because even when the sun and moon reach the extreme of their northward movement, they do not come north from the center of this Jambudvipa. The sun and moon have dimensions: the width of the moon's disc is fifty yojanas, and the width of the sun's disc is fifty-one yojanas. The circumference of both is three times their diameter, and the height of both is six and a half and one-eighteenth of a yojana. There is a difference in essence: the underside of the sun is made of fire crystal, and the underside of the moon is made of water crystal. On top of both of them is a golden fence, surrounded by half a yojana in width. There are pleasure gardens and so on, and inside are many cities of gods, where the divine sons, the sun and moon, reside with their retinues. Regarding the image on the surface of the moon, there are different explanations, but it should be considered as depicting the image of the rabbit in which the Teacher took birth, because it corresponds to the name "Rabbit-holder." There is a number of stars: one of the four continents has two billion eight hundred and fifty million stars. The large ones are eighteen yojanas, the medium ones are between ten and twelve yojanas, and the small ones are said to be three and one yojana. There is a partial function: the sun warms cold things, and the moon cools hot things. They help trees, crops, and so on to grow, and they also cause various kinds of harm. There is a way of acting: for example, when it is midnight in a place where the sound is unpleasant, it is sunset in a place where the body is tall, it is half-day in this Jambudvipa, and it is sunrise in Godhaniya. These four times are the same, and the same applies to other continents. There are also different views on this: some believe that the time when day and night are equal is the same time, and others believe that each moment changes in that way. Our own system follows the latter view.
