These are the corresponding mental factors of attention. These five are pervasive in all minds, hence they are called pervasive. Desire, ascertainment, mindfulness, concentration, and wisdom are the five object-determining factors. Desire is: a wish to pursue that object. For example, wanting to become a Buddha and pursuing it is both a wish and a desire, but it may not be greed. Desire for a woman, for example, includes desire, wish, and greed. Ascertainment is: wanting to hold the meaning as it is determined, such as remembering the qualities of the Three Jewels and generating ascertainment. Mindfulness is: the mental factor of holding the meaning as it is determined without forgetting it. Concentration is: the mental factor of abiding single-pointedly on a virtuous object, whether for a long or short time; those who are single-pointed on non-virtue are not included. Wisdom is: the mental factor of completely and excellently discriminating the object of focus; wrong wisdom is not included. These are object-determining because they are determined individually or separately for their respective objects. The eleven from faith to pliancy are the eleven virtuous mental factors. The first is: the mental factors of delighting in special objects and what should be accepted or rejected, such as wanting to engage with the guru, the Three Jewels, karma and its results, and the acceptance and rejection of the Four Noble Truths. Self-respect is: feeling ashamed of wrongdoing, thinking that this action is not in accordance with the Dharma and should not be done. Regard for others is: feeling ashamed of wrongdoing, thinking that doing this will be criticized by others. Conscientiousness is: guarding the mind against all aspects of wrongdoing. Equanimity is: remaining in the middle, without being biased towards any side. Non-harming is: not harming others, that is, not harboring harmful thoughts. The virtue of non-attachment is: not being attached to contaminated objects such as the five objects of desire. Non-hatred is: not having a mind of torment towards others. Non-ignorance is: not being ignorant of the rough acceptance and rejection of karma and its results. Diligence is: delighting in virtuous actions; delighting in non-virtuous actions is not included. Pliancy is: making the mind serviceable. These are determined to be virtuous, so they are the eleven virtuous mental factors. Afflictions such as greed, anger, pride, ignorance, and doubt are the six root afflictions. Greed is towards contaminated objects.

These are the mental factors of craving for a place. That is, craving for the five desirable objects such as the beauty of form, the pleasantness of sound, the fragrance of smell, the deliciousness of taste, and the smoothness of touch, which are contaminated. Craving for the beauty of the Buddha's body and the pleasantness of his speech is not like that. Anger is: intensely tormenting others in every way. Pride is: the state of being conceited. Ignorance is: being ignorant of the true meaning of objects and the results of actions. Doubtful afflictions are: doubting the immutability of one's own object, such as thinking, "Is karma true or not? It seems mostly untrue." These are the root of existence, so they are established as root afflictions. The five views of destructible view, extreme view, wrong view, view of holding views as supreme, and view of holding moral discipline and asceticism as supreme are: Destructible view is: the wisdom afflicted with clinging to these aggregates of appropriation as self or belonging to self. Extreme view is: viewing that self, as held by destructible view, as either permanent or annihilated. Wrong view is: viewing that there are no special objects such as the Three Jewels and the results of actions. View of holding views as supreme is: holding such a wrong view as the supreme view. View of holding moral discipline as supreme is: holding bad moral discipline and asceticism as supreme. These five are called views of holding onto bad views. The twenty from anger to distraction are secondary afflictions. Anger is: a mental factor of being disturbed by the one who harms, which arises from hatred, but is not the same as hatred. Resentment is: holding a grudge against the one who harms and not letting go. Concealing is: unnecessarily hiding the faults one has committed. Annoyance is: mental agitation caused by anger. Jealousy is: being disturbed by the excellence of others' qualities and possessions. Miserliness is: holding onto contaminated possessions tightly. Deceit is: concealing faults and secretly transferring them elsewhere. Cunning is: pretending to have qualities that one does not have. Arrogance is: being attached to one's own possessions and being proud. Harm is: hindering others. Shamelessness is: not being ashamed of faults by using oneself or the Dharma as a reason. Immodesty is: being ridiculed by others.
