Is not being afraid. Torpor is: making body and mind confused. Excitement is: making the mind not peaceful. Disrespect is: not respecting qualities, those who possess qualities, and what to accept or reject, etc. Laziness is: not being enthusiastic about virtue. Carelessness is: acting perversely. Forgetfulness is: forgetting the object of virtue. Non-alertness is: not knowing the action or, even if knowing, acting with a distracted mind. Distraction is: a mental factor that causes the mind to wander away from the object of virtue. These arise from the root afflictions and are close to them, so they are called near afflictions. Sleep is: a mental factor with the function of completely gathering the mind. Regret is: being remorseful or displeased with what has been done. Gross conception is: causing the mind to engage coarsely with the object. Subtle conception is: causing the mind to engage subtly with the object. Likewise, sometimes it becomes virtuous, sometimes it becomes non-virtuous, and sometimes it may become neutral, so it is called changeable. For example, dreaming of seeing the Buddha in sleep and generating faith is virtuous, rejoicing in dreaming of killing is non-virtuous, and being like losing consciousness becomes neutral. Regretting non-virtuous deeds is virtuous, regretting virtuous deeds is non-virtuous, and regretting intermediate things becomes neutral, like this. In general, the main part of conditioned phenomena is the two types of karma, white and black. Karma is divided into mental factors and form. Non-associated formations are: imputed on the states of form, mind, and mental factors, which are those previously mentioned. However, the reason why name, sentence, and letter are explained as non-associated formations is that it is made according to the intention of the collection, continuation, and the general series of sounds of these three. Some other schools consider the nature of sound, and if so, it must be considered included in form. In short, if it is impermanent, then your impermanence and arising and ceasing, etc., are necessarily non-associated formations. The meaning of non-associated formations is: just as mental factors are associated with the mind through five equal ways, non-associated formations are not associated in that way. The fifth is the aggregate of consciousness: taking objects by its own power.

The respective entities are the primary minds of consciousness that discern things. Among them, there are six consciousnesses from eye consciousness to mind consciousness. Although there is no certainty of accepting the Alaya consciousness and the afflicted mind, if one wishes to accept them, adding these two makes it the eight aggregates of consciousness. The five objects of the five sense consciousnesses have already been explained. The object of mind consciousness is the Dharma realm, which is mind, intellect, consciousness, and primary mind, all of which are different names for the same meaning. The way mind and mental factors focus on objects is: mind is established only by focusing on the entity of its object, while mental factors are established through focusing on the distinctions of the object. For example, the eye consciousness that grasps blue is complete in its characteristic by merely grasping blue itself, while its retinue, such as feeling, is established through focusing on the distinctions of blue; merely grasping blue is not sufficient. The consciousnesses appear as if piled up in various ways as the essence of intelligence, therefore they are called aggregates, but they are not piled up like form. Third, regarding the additional content, there are two: order and necessity. First, the order of the five aggregates is that form is shown first because form is very coarse, so it is shown first. Then, feeling is slightly subtle, perception is more subtle than feeling, formation is more subtle than perception, and consciousness is more subtle than all of them, which is done according to the order from coarse to subtle. Or, first seeing form gives rise to afflictions, then wanting to experience pleasure, then inverted perception arises, thereby accumulating karma, which in turn leads to consciousness becoming defiled. Or, just as a container holds food, form serves as the basis for feeling; just as food is to be enjoyed, feeling is the object enjoyed by consciousness; just as seasonings and salt make food delicious, perception names pleasure and pain; just as a skillful hand delivers food, formation generates pleasure and pain; just as a person eats food, consciousness enjoys the order of pleasure and pain. Furthermore, the order of the five senses, such as the eye, is: the eye sees objects that are very far away, the ear hears sounds that are far away, but it does not hear as far as the eye sees. After the nose smells nearby odors, the taste is then experienced, which is the order. Furthermore, the eye exists first, and the other three are after.
