The Classification of the Five Aggregates, A Condensed Essence of Abhidharma. The Classification of the Five Aggregates, A Condensed Essence of Abhidharma. This is the treatise called The Classification of the Five Aggregates, A Condensed Essence of Abhidharma. Homage to Noble Manjushri The Bhagavan who reveals all dharmas with manifest insight. His successor, Mipham Chökyi Gyalpo. The great charioteers, Asanga and Vasubandhu, etc. I respectfully bow to all the scholars of Jambudvipa. Here, the classifications of aggregates, elements, sense bases, etc., as explained by the Victorious One in the Abhidharma Sutra, are extensively explained by Asanga and his followers in the Abhidharmasamuccaya and the root commentary of the Abhidharmakośa, etc. In particular, Vasubandhu separately composed an explanation of the five aggregates in a manner suitable for those of lesser intelligence and those who prefer brevity. Regarding the classifications of aggregates, elements, etc., the meaning explained in the Abhidharmakośa, I have already explained in its commentary. Here, in order to explain the intention of the chapter on the five aggregates, I will explain what is appropriate. This has three parts: a brief presentation by way of a classification of names, an explanation of their meaning with some distinctions, and an explanation of the remaining meaning. First, there are five aggregates: the aggregate of form, the aggregate of feeling, the aggregate of perception, the aggregate of formation, and the aggregate of consciousness. The aggregate of form is divided into fifteen: the four great elements and the eleven forms derived from them. The four great elements are the four elements of earth, water, fire, and wind. The eleven forms derived from them are the sense faculties of the eye, ear, nose, tongue, and body, as well as the objects of form, sound, smell, taste, and touch, and non-revealing form. The aggregate of feeling is threefold: feelings of pleasure, pain, and equanimity. The aggregate of perception is also threefold: perceptions of smallness, greatness, and infinity, etc. The aggregate of formation is twofold: associated formations and non-associated formations. Associated formations include fifty-one mental factors, and non-associated formations include fourteen. The first fifty-one are contact, attention, feeling, perception, and intention, which are the five omnipresent factors. Desire, conviction, mindfulness, concentration, and wisdom are the five object-determining factors.

Having the roots of virtue of faith, knowing shame, having embarrassment, non-attachment, non-hatred, and non-ignorance, as well as diligence, extreme gentleness, caution, equanimity, and non-harming, these eleven are virtues. Desire, anger, pride, ignorance, afflicted views, and afflicted doubt, these six are the root afflictions. Wrath, holding grudges, concealment, vexation, jealousy, stinginess, deceit, pretense, arrogance, non-harming, shamelessness, lack of embarrassment, drowsiness, agitation, lack of faith, laziness, carelessness, forgetfulness, distraction, and non-knowing, these twenty are the near afflictions. Regret, sleep, investigation, and analysis, these four are called variable. Second, non-associated compositional factors are: attainment and the like, as well as non-conceptualization, cessation attainment, non-conceptual beings, life force, similarity, birth, abiding, impermanence, letters, names, aggregates of words, ordinary beings, and such concordant factors, these fourteen are non-associated compositional factors. The aggregate of consciousness is six or eight, namely the six consciousnesses of eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind, and adding the two of afflicted mind and base consciousness, some consider it to be eight. Furthermore, the sources divided from the aggregates are twelve, namely the six sources of eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind are the sources of the subject, and the six sources of form, sound, smell, taste, and touch are the sources of the object. There are eighteen realms, namely the six realms of eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind are the realms of the dependent sense faculties, and the realms of form, sound, smell, taste, touch, and phenomena are the realms of the objective sphere. The six realms from eye consciousness to mind consciousness are the realms of the dependent consciousness. Second, explaining in a slightly more detailed way, there are five: the aggregate of form, the aggregate of feeling, the aggregate of perception, the aggregate of compositional factors, and the aggregate of consciousness. First, there are two: arising and arising from the arising, first arising has four: earth, water, fire, and wind.
