To briefly discuss the distinctions of giving and receiving: Generally, apart from the water used for rinsing the mouth by a bhikṣu, it is said that even water drunk out of thirst requires giving and receiving. Therefore, all food and drink must be preceded by giving and receiving. Furthermore, one who has not taken full ordination must request giving and receiving from one who has. Specifically, a bhikṣu observing the precepts may request giving and receiving from a pure bhikṣu. Similarly, a bhikṣuṇī may request from a bhikṣu, and one who is not observing the precepts but is impure may request from one who is pure, and one with inferior views may request from one with superior views. Initially, one who is not a bhikṣu must request giving and receiving from a bhikṣu, so that he may also give and receive to other bhikṣus. Between the giver and the receiver, there must be an intervening object, such as earth, stone, wood, animals, etc., that is four finger-widths in both width and height. Water and fire must also be more than just a little; they must be clearly visible objects. If the basis for giving and receiving is a table, it may also be done on the table, and giving and receiving should be done with both hands, but if it is inconvenient, one hand may be used. Generally, one should be close, but especially if receiving from someone of low caste, one should not receive with the hands, but say, "Place it on the threshold or this wooden strip," and placing it in this way is said to accomplish the giving and receiving. If there is no companion, recalling the act is like having given and received, and it is permissible to eat and drink. The causes for the destruction of giving and receiving are stated in the Vinaya: "Seizing, questioning, touching, offering, and one who is not a bhikṣu, transformation of objects and transformation of life, abandonment also destroys giving and receiving." And being made impure by fire, water, etc., also destroys giving and receiving. If a non-bhikṣu directly touches food and drink that has been given and received, the giving and receiving is destroyed. Merely moving something like a table does not destroy giving and receiving, for if it did, moving a house would also destroy giving and receiving, which is impossible. However, some people nowadays do not hesitate to let small dogs and things called "Ali" touch and move food, which is seen as inappropriate. The four medicines that have been given and received, generally, if the giving and receiving has not been broken and the time limit for each has passed, become storage. However, if something like a meal is given and received only for the sake of the morning, it becomes storage even if it is past noon.
