A Concise Overview of the Three Bases for Practicing Discipline, An Entrance for the Wise. A Concise Overview of the Three Bases for Practicing Discipline, An Entrance for the Wise. This is the treatise called "A Concise Overview of the Three Bases for Practicing Discipline, An Entrance for the Wise." Homage to Shakyamuni! The ocean of Vinaya teachings, the essence of the three bases it expresses, for the benefit of other wise ones, I will explain it in an easy-to-understand way. Here, I will gather and list some of the closely needed meanings that appear in the Vinaya texts. In general, there are two types of bases: three and seventeen. The first is: the three bases of obtaining vows that have not been obtained, protecting those that have been obtained from being lost, and restoring them when they have been lost. All the meanings of the Vinaya teachings are gathered there. Here are the three bases for practicing discipline: namely, the complete training of discipline, relying on the conditions for peaceful abiding, and the basis of actions. The first also has three bases: namely, the Posadha, the Rainy Season Retreat, and the Dissolution. The first has two: the common aspect and the individual self-nature. The first has five: meaning of the word, classification, collection, order, and benefits. The first is: because it cultivates discipline and purifies sins, it is called Posadha. Secondly, if classified, there are seven: namely, the Posadha of Tranquility, the Concordant Posadha, the Fourteenth Day Posadha, the Fifteenth Day Posadha, the Posadha of Averting Harm, the Posadha of Pacifying Disputes, and the Auspicious Posadha. Thirdly, if collected, they can be collected into two types of Posadha: Tranquility and Concordant, because the latter five can be included in the Concordant Posadha. Fourthly, the so-called Base-Position Posadha refers to Tranquility and Insight each separately, and the practice of combining the two, as appropriate. If considered in terms of the order of arising, the Posadha of Tranquility arises in dependence on the Concordant Posadha. However, because the words in the scriptures are concise, and in terms of excellence, the Posadha of Tranquility is mentioned first. Fifthly: temporarily obtaining the high status of gods and humans, and ultimately attaining peaceful Nirvana. The second, the method of meditating on Tranquility, should be known elsewhere. Explaining the Concordant Posadha has three aspects: the place where it is practiced, the person who practices it, and the ritual of how it is practiced. The first is: through the door of ritual.

Whether formed by consensus or naturally, or accomplished by individual effort, its minimum size should be able to accommodate forty cushions, and its boundaries should extend three and a half kusha from the center outwards. Second, generally speaking, all five monastic communities need to participate. In particular, by avoiding two kinds of inconsistencies, etc., and through the means of willingness and complete dedication, the invited person can perform it. The third part has three stages: preparation, main practice, and conclusion. The first part is: gathering the Sangha by striking the Ghandi and so on, confessing downfalls, and listening to and teaching the Dharma. The second part, the main practice, is divided into two parts: when to perform it, and how to perform the ritual. The first part is divided into two parts: general explanation and specific explanation. Generally, there are twenty-four Uposatha in a year, because there are six fourteenth days and eighteen fifteenth days. That is, all twelve days of the waxing moon, and six days out of the waning moon, a total of eighteen days are the fifteenth days that can last the whole day. The other six days of the waning moon are the fourteenth days that cannot last the whole day. If there is an intercalary month, then there will be twenty-six Uposatha. The second part has five aspects: meaning of the word, time, month, cause of arising, and question and answer. First, the fifteenth Uposatha are called "can last the whole day," because according to worldly parlance, it must be performed at the end of fifteen days and nights. The fourteenth is called "cannot last the whole day," because the date cannot make up for the lack of days and nights, even if it is the fifteenth day, it must be performed at the time of the fourteenth day and night. The date cannot make up for the lack of days and nights, because the date is less than an hour shorter than the day and night. Second, early winter, mid-winter, early spring, mid-spring, early summer, and mid-summer each have two, because each of the six seasons has two consecutive months, and when two and a half months have passed and half remains, the situation of not being able to last the whole day will occur. Third, if it is combined with the Mongolian calendar, it is easy to understand. At the end of the six months of January, March, May, July, September, and November of the Mongolian calendar, the situation of not being able to last the whole day will occur, so it is the fourteenth Uposatha. All the others are the fifteenth, that is, if the beginning of the year is counted from the sixteenth of October, and the waning moon is taken as the leader, then when combined with the constellations, they are Krittika, Antares, and Vishakha, etc.
