Since the arising and ceasing are established as truly existent, therefore, one must first make two observations, as this will lead to four faults: Is such a self one with or different from the separate moments of the arising and ceasing? If it is one, then it is unreasonable for the before and after to become one, because in that case, the self of the past and future lives and the self of this life would become an indivisible whole. Therefore, there would be a common basis for the six realms of beings. If it is thought to be different, then it would be impossible to remember past lives. Generally speaking, there is no fault in merely being different. However, if such a self is different from those parts, then it will become an independent or unrelated difference. In this way, it will become different from all parts to all parts. In that case, it would be impossible to remember that I was born in such a place at that time, because the two parts of the past and future lives are separate individuals with no connection or relationship. For example, just as a person would not remember himself as a person with a different continuum, thinking, "I became him." If it is said that there is no fault because the continuum is one, then that answer is also unreasonable. Although the one continuum can be accepted in name, if it is established as different as held by the ego-grasping, then it will become an independent individual. Since it is established as self-established, therefore, the one continuum is also unreasonable. On this, the *Entering the Middle Way* says: "If those are separately different by their own characteristics, it is not reasonable for them to become one continuum." Furthermore, there will also be the occurrence of encountering the result without having done the deed, and the deed done being wasted. Because a person established by nature accumulates karma, and then another person established by nature experiences the result. Because the one who accumulates the karma has already perished before experiencing the result of the karma. This is pervasive, because if one perishes as self-established, then it is impossible to be reborn later. As the *Root Wisdom* says: "Cessation and all actions, loss and others' actions, others' experience will also occur, and there will be such things." Having examined in this way, one should think that such a self is not established as one with the five aggregates on top of them. Fourth, the key to determining the separation from truth is:

If it is thought that I and the aggregates are not established as one, but as different? That is also unreasonable. If that were the case, it would become a self-established difference, and would become an unrelated difference. If that were the case, just as a vase can be held separately from a pillar, I would need to be seen somewhere, apart from the five aggregates being individually excluded. However, because it is not seen. The Root Wisdom says: 'I am not the one who takes, nor is it reasonable to be other than the one who takes. If there is another, without taking, if it is reasonable to be held, then it cannot be held.' Furthermore, it is not established as different in that way. In general, just the 'I' has the three characteristics of arising, ceasing, and abiding, which represent the compounded phenomena of the aggregates. Because the thought 'I am' arises on the collection of aggregates, and when the aggregates arise and cease, I should also be considered to arise and cease. For example, when the aggregates etc. flourish and decline, I can also be considered to flourish and decline. If it is not like that, if I and the aggregates are different in nature like a horse and an ox, then such a term is unreasonable, because it is unrelated. The Root Wisdom says: 'If it is said to be other than the aggregates, then there will be no characteristics of the aggregates.' Therefore, I think that the 'I' that is the object of clinging, as held by the grasping at self, is not established as different from the five aggregates, which are the basis of its imputation. Like this, based on analyzing the four key points, if it is certain that the 'I' held by the grasping at self does not exist, then it is said to be the first time to find the view of the Middle Way, and to newly realize emptiness through intellectual inference. Here, doing the basis of searching in that way is also for the sake of easy understanding. Otherwise, even if only 'I' is taken as the basis of searching, there is not much difference. If expressed in a rational way, it is like this: On a stirred variegated rope, when darkness descends, the thought of mistaking it for a snake arises. At that time, the snake is only imputed by the mind, just as none of the collection, continuity, and parts of the variegated rope are snakes. When the darkness of ignorance descends on the collection and continuity of the aggregates, the thought of mistaking it for self arises. At that time, apart from being imputed as self on the collection and continuity of the aggregates, none of the parts of the collection and continuity of the aggregates are self.
