From emptiness, just as various appearances arise from knowledge, similarly, even though all things are empty, everything can arise from emptiness. As Dromtonpa Rinpoche said: All phenomena are false appearances, but if there is no form, how can there be an image? Even though the cause is false, it can produce a result, therefore, continuously practicing the excellent karma, this is the oral transmission of the Kadampa teachings. As Je Rinpoche said: All of this is empty in nature, and from this, this result arises, these two certainties, without any obstruction, become mutual companions, what could be more wonderful than this, what could be more rare than this? As Panchen Rinpoche said: The nature of samsara and nirvana has not even a particle of inherent existence, while the interdependent origination of cause and effect is not deceptive, these two coexist. Therefore, if one does not realize the meaning of emptiness as it is, then is it that effort here is also in vain? Even if one does not realize it as it is, effort will not become meaningless, because even merely generating faith in this principle can produce great benefits. As it is said in the *Sutra of the Boy Given Treasure*: Manjushri, a Bodhisattva who lacks skillful means, even if he practices the six perfections for hundreds of thousands of eons, it is not as much merit as someone who listens to this Dharma category with doubt. What need is there to mention listening without doubt? What need is there to mention writing, holding, reciting, and widely proclaiming it to others? As the Holy Nagarjuna said: Merely generating faith in this profound Dharma accumulates all merit. As the Holy Deva said: With small merit, one will not have even a slight doubt about this Dharma, merely having doubt will destroy samsara. As the teacher Kamalashila said: All the merit accumulated by all sentient beings, compared to the Bodhisattva arising from this, the Bodhisattva is more excellent. The merit arising from the Bodhicitta of the Bodhisattva is more than the merit arising from upholding the true Dharma. The merit arising from Bodhicitta, the merit arising from upholding the true Dharma,

Because they said, "Even if one is interested in emptiness, one cannot endure even sixteen drops (referring to bindu)." Therefore, I, too, was guided by faith upon seeing that the scriptures of the Sutras and commentaries extensively explain such benefits, and thus I have made this effort. Saying: The wheel of wisdom is fully expanded, there is no obstruction in the sky of knowable things, the light of fame is constantly bright, may the venerable Lama bestow auspiciousness! Thinking of the depth of the great water treasure of the Protector's good speech, entered by the excellent captain of discriminating wisdom, from which the essence of the meaning, the precious jewel, is obtained, I also feel that I am fortunate. However, on the surface of the profound meaning, like a silken cloth, if it is stained by the impurity of misinterpretation, if it happens to be stained, then I confess before the venerable Lama. May the pure white virtue obtained from the good explanation, may all beings, through the practice of understanding dependent origination, be liberated from all clinging bonds, and may it be dedicated to attaining the ultimate perfect enlightenment of peace. Thus, this, called "A Lamp Illuminating the Meaning of the Three Principal Aspects of the Path," was written at the behest of Kou Shi Nangso, who was born into a noble lineage and possessed the eye of wisdom to see all the scriptures, and at the urging of Gepa Shedrup, who was the first to hold the position of the Zöne philosophical master, and who was well-versed in the scriptures, and also out of the intention that I myself might leave an impression on the profound meaning and that it might benefit others. Sarva Mangalam! "A Lamp Illuminating the Meaning of the Three Principal Aspects of the Path."
