"The Lamp Illuminating the Meaning of the Three Principal Aspects of the Path" "The Lamp Illuminating the Meaning of the Three Principal Aspects of the Path" "The Lamp Illuminating the Meaning of the Three Principal Aspects of the Path." Homage to Gurumanjughosaya (藏文,梵文天城体,guru mañjughoṣāya,梵文罗马拟音, गुरुमञ्जुघोषाय,上师妙音). Having paid homage to the supreme teacher and his son, Manjushri, Nagarjuna and Chandrakirti, Atisha, and the second Victor, father and son, I will here explain the condensed essence of their profound intention. Furthermore, the venerable Manjushri said to the venerable one: In general, although there are many categories of Dharma, there are three that lead to liberation: renunciation, the mind of enlightenment, and the correct view. As the instructions say, although there are many divisions of Dharma to be practiced by those who desire liberation, these three are the main paths, because all the stages of the path for the three types of individuals are included in the practice of these three. Therefore, there are three sections to this explanation: renunciation, the mind of enlightenment, and the correct view. The first has three parts: the necessity of seeking renunciation, the method of generating it, and the measure of having generated it. The first is that a person who desires liberation must first seek renunciation. If the mind of renunciation, which desires liberation from samsara, has not arisen in one's mindstream, then the mind that primarily seeks the contaminated pleasures of samsara will not turn back, and as long as it does not turn back, the experience of the suffering of samsara will not turn back either. Furthermore, the noose of existence, which is attached to the pleasures of samsara, will also bind one to samsara. As Je Lama said: Without pure renunciation, there is no way to seek peace in the fruits of happiness in the ocean of existence. Because attachment to existence binds embodied beings in all ways, first seek renunciation. Therefore. Secondly, the method of generating renunciation has two parts: how to reverse the appearances of this life and how to reverse the appearances of future lives. The first, how to reverse that appearance, is that even though one has obtained this precious human body with all the freedoms and advantages, which is difficult to obtain and has great meaning once obtained, the nature of impermanence and death is such that there are many causes of death and few causes of life, so there are those who die prematurely. Therefore, there is no certainty that one will be able to endure as long as the stated lifespan. Therefore, one cannot remain freely and accomplish one's desires for a long time.

Without leisure for practice, if one commits sinful deeds for the sake of this life alone, thinking that after death one will be born in the lower realms and experience unbearable suffering, one should repeatedly contemplate this. In order to reverse the attachment to the happiness of this life alone, one should do so. As it is said: "Difficult to find leisure and fortune, no leisure in life, By habituating the mind, reverse the attachment to this life." This is in terms of the path common to the lesser person. Secondly, there is a way to reverse the attachment to future lives. Just as planting barley and peas separately will produce different fruits, the two causes of virtue and non-virtue will produce the fruits of happiness and suffering without fail. By the way of the infallibility of cause and effect, from beginningless time until now, one has experienced various happiness and suffering in the six realms of samsara. Even if one is not born in the lower realms, until one is completely liberated from samsara, even if one is born in the higher realms, one must alternately experience happiness and suffering. If one repeatedly contemplates these, one will also reverse the attachment to the happiness of higher rebirths in future lives. As it is said: "The suffering of samsara, the infallibility of cause and effect, If one repeatedly contemplates, reverse the attachment to future lives." Thirdly, the standard for generating renunciation shown here is: By taking the general suffering of samsara and the particular suffering of hell, etc., and placing them on one's own mind, and repeatedly contemplating and habituating oneself, at some point one will not have the thought of "If only I could have such perfection" for any of the perfections of samsara. Day and night, one will effortlessly generate the mind of seeking liberation from suffering and the causes of suffering. At that time, it can be considered that pure renunciation, which is the essence of the path, has arisen in one's mind. As it is said: "If one habituates in this way, one will not generate even a moment's desire for the perfections of samsara, Day and night, one will only desire liberation, If liberation arises, then renunciation has arisen." This refers to the special renunciation of the path. Otherwise, in the Smaller Stages of the Path, it says: "Having thoroughly understood the nature of samsara through the two aspects of suffering and the causes of suffering, the thought of wanting to abandon it, and the thought of wanting to attain the pacification of these, is already the thought of renunciation." It should be understood in this way.
