Seeds give rise to grains, rice, and so on. Its fruit exists within it, yet it also does not exist. This is an example. The meaning is that the Bodhi of all Buddhas will arise, because the nature of things is emptiness, arising like an illusion. This is what was said. Secondly, for example, from seeds of barley, peas, rice, and so on, gradually arise their respective fruits, such as barley and so on. However, the fruits such as barley are not those previous seeds, nor are they present within each seed or any collection of them. Therefore, they do not exist when the seeds exist. However, due to the continuous connection of these seeds, fruits such as barley appear nominally. Similarly, from the first to the last Bodhicitta, there is no complete Bodhi in any single one or any collection. Therefore, when the causal Bodhicitta exists, the great Bodhi as the fruit does not exist. However, the continuum of these Bodhicittas is connected in one's own continuum, and from the interdependent relationship of reliance, the fruit of complete Bodhi will arise, just as before. Therefore, the great fruit of Bodhi does not exist when the causal Bodhicitta exists, nor does it arise without relying on the cause, but it is not contradictory that it arises nominally in an illusory manner. Because the entities of cause and effect are empty of inherent existence, yet the actions of interdependence are reasonable and not deceptive. This is what is being taught. Acharya Sengzang also explained it again in the commentary on the Compendium, but I did not quote it for fear of being too lengthy. The example of wood and barley seeds can also be used to understand other similar situations. Thirdly, the example of water droplets has two parts: citing the source and explaining the meaning. First, in the Compendium it says: Just as a vase is filled with water droplets from the first to the last, gradually, little by little, it is completely filled. This is an example. The meaning and connection are: Similarly, the first mind is also the cause of supreme Bodhi, gradually, through the perfection of white qualities, it will become a Buddha. This is what was said. Secondly, explaining by combining the example and the meaning. For example, when water droplets are gradually poured into a vase, the vase is not filled with water by just the first, second, etc., single droplet, nor is it filled by just the later droplets without relying on the earlier droplets.
