Even if gathered together and burned, the earlier and later moments of the lamp flame arise sequentially, with each later one becoming more powerful than the earlier one. The later ones are continuously connected to the earlier ones, and through the interdependent origination of reliance, the lamp completely burns the tree trunk. Similarly, relying on the generation of bodhicitta, one will attain complete enlightenment. Secondly, the meaning and method of combining that are: one cannot attain great enlightenment with just one or two of the initial and final generations of bodhicitta. One cannot attain it without relying on the earlier ones. Even if the earlier and later ones gather together, one cannot attain great enlightenment. However, there is no fault of not attaining great enlightenment by relying on it. Just like the example given earlier, the earlier and later generations of bodhicitta arise sequentially, with each later one becoming more powerful than the earlier one. Because the earlier and later ones are continuously connected in their own continuum, through the interdependent origination of reliance, a Bodhisattva will attain complete enlightenment. That method is explained in the Mother Sutra in a slightly abbreviated way: 'Subhuti, what do you think? When an oil lamp is burning, is the wick burned by the first flame that touches it? Or is the wick burned by the later flame that touches it?' He replied, 'Bhagavan, it is not.' From then on, the Buddha said, 'Subhuti, what do you think? Is the wick burned?' He replied, 'Bhagavan, it is burned.' After giving this example, the Buddha said, 'Subhuti, similarly, the first generation of bodhicitta does not cause a Bodhisattva Mahasattva to fully awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Nor does one awaken without relying on the first generation of bodhicitta. The later generation of bodhicitta also does not cause one to fully awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Nor does one awaken without relying on the later generation of bodhicitta. It is not through those generations of bodhicitta, nor through others apart from those generations of bodhicitta, that one fully awakens. A Bodhisattva Mahasattva does awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment.' After saying this, the venerable Subhuti said to the Bhagavan, 'Bhagavan, this dependent origination is profound!' and so on.

Likewise. Here, all three Prajnaparamita Sutras are similar except for a few different words. The example of the lamp appears in all the Mother Sutras and their Indian and Tibetan commentaries. The examples of seed sprouts and water droplets are explained in the Compendium and its commentary. This example has a way of avoiding two extremes. Just as each previous moment of a lamp ceases and each subsequent moment arises, it shows that the previous bodhicitta ceases and the subsequent one arises, thus eliminating the extreme of permanence. Just as the relationship of interdependence between the previous and subsequent moments of a lamp leads to the term "burning a tree," the continuous connection of previous and subsequent bodhicitta and the nature of dependent origination lead to the attainment of enlightenment, thus eliminating the extreme of nihilism. This lamp example also represents other similar examples. Second, regarding the meaning of the seed example, there are two stages. The first stage has two parts: citing the source and explaining the meaning. The first is: From the Compendium: "From the seed arise sprouts, flowers, and fruits. It also ceases and is not nonexistent." This is the example. The meaning is: Similarly, the initial mind is also the cause of enlightenment, but it also ceases, and it is not that there is no enlightenment. Second, the example and meaning are explained together: For example, from the seed of a Bodhi tree, first sprouts, then flowers, and then fruits gradually arise. When the tree becomes large, the seeds from the very beginning gradually cease and disappear, but the fruit and the tree are seen to exist. Similarly, each bodhicitta from the first to the last is the cause of its own fruit, the great enlightenment. However, as the previous and subsequent bodhicittas gradually arise, when enlightenment is finally attained, the cause, the previous and subsequent bodhicittas, gradually cease and disappear. Even though they are gone, their fruit, the great enlightenment, is not nonexistent. This is so because the cause of both the example and the meaning, the continuous connection of the seed and the dependent origination on which it relies, is similar to the accomplishment of the fruit. This text also shows that although the two causes of the example and the meaning ceased earlier, the fruit will arise later, thus directly preventing the two extremes, as before. The second has two parts: citing the source and explaining the meaning. The first is: From the Compendium:
