Although not filled with water all at once, just as a vase can be filled with water through the continuous and increasing interdependent relationship of gradually pouring water, similarly, although the first and second bodhicitta, etc., alone, and only the latter relying on the former, do not cause the attainment of great enlightenment, gradually attaining enlightenment is possible through the continuous and increasing interdependent collection of prior and subsequent bodhicitta, as explained earlier in the example of the candle. However, the candle does not attain enlightenment through each individual cause alone, nor through many causes gathering at once, but it can attain enlightenment. The water droplets in the vase mainly demonstrate the gradual accumulation of small causes to increase, thereby attaining the fruit of enlightenment. The example of the seed is also similar to the candle. However, just as the fruits of the Bodhi tree, barley, etc., do not exist at the time of the seed, but their later appearance is not contradictory, similarly, although complete enlightenment does not exist at the time of the cause—bodhicitta—it later arises like an illusion from the cause of emptiness of inherent existence; this is the distinction. The example of the water droplet can also symbolize other similar situations, which should be understood. Third, regarding the incidental meaning, there are two aspects: debate and response. First, regarding the debate, some say: It is unreasonable for the previous moment of a candle to cease and the next moment to arise, because it is manifestly seen that the candle exists from the moment it is lit until it finally dies out. It is also unreasonable for the previous seed of barley, etc., to cease and the next to arise, because it is manifestly seen that those seeds are one and the fruit is also one. It is also unreasonable for the previous water droplets to cease when the later water droplets are poured into the vase, because the vase is filled with water because those previous water droplets exist; if they do not exist, the vase cannot be filled with water. Similarly, it is not possible to attain enlightenment by the previous bodhicitta ceasing and the next arising; it is only reasonable to attain enlightenment by the former existing and the latter arising. Second, in response to this, many modes of reasoning must be stated, and although it is possible to state them, for fear of prolixity, I will state it briefly. First, there is no fault in the candle's previous moment ceasing and the next moment not arising. Because in reality the former ceases and the latter arises, but in

Seeing it as one is like the parts of a candle, where each moment of the past and future arises and ceases, but because of the attribute that all parts and continuity follow, the term "candle" still exists. Therefore, it is because of this reason that the mind that mistakes the past and future as one arises. For example, although one sees the stages of growth from a young child to an old person, because of continuity and attributes, the mind that grasps the past and future as one arises. Furthermore, due to the innate clinging to permanence, the attachment to the past and future as one also arises. Therefore, it is not wrong to assume that if the previous seed ceases, the subsequent seed will not arise. Generally, a seed like wheat or barley is referred to as "one." But in reality, before sowing, immediately after sowing, and then due to the difference between day and night, the seed itself changes, the previous seed is different from the subsequent seed, and the shape, color, ability, etc., change and eventually produce fruit. There are many other examples, but as before. When pouring drops of water one after another into a vase, it is not wrong to assume that if the previous drop of water ceases, it will not continue to flow. In that drop of water, there will be two drops of water that are not mixed, the previous and the subsequent, and three drops of water that are mixed. These three drops of water must also be considered temporarily contradictory. Like this, when the previous drop of water and the subsequent drop of water are mixed, the previous drop of water changes and produces the nature of the subsequent mixture. Therefore, even a fool would not consider the unmixed and mixed to be the same. When the vase is filled with water, the previous drops of water arise and cease one by one. But at that time, there is the vase water with attributes that arises from the collection of water currents, and it must also be assumed that there are drops of water that are part of it. For example, when cloth is made from many threads, although the threads that were the cause of the cloth do not exist at that time, it is like the threads that are part of the cloth with attributes still exist. Similarly, the causes of great enlightenment, such as the generation of bodhicitta and white and black karma, etc., although most of the previous cease and the subsequent arise, because these parts are continuous and the names of bodhicitta and karma, etc., related to continuity generally exist, it is not contradictory to attain enlightenment by relying on bodhicitta, therefore cause and effect.
