The basis for classification and the classifications of samādhi. First, it is a higher realm's samāpatti that is included by any separation or causing separation from attachment to any of the three: one's own lower desire realm and the first three dhyānas. It is divided into four: the first, second, third, and fourth dhyānas. Regarding the distinctions, although there are many aspects of tranquility, if summarized, it is the one-pointedness of mind, together with its concomitants, that is separated or caused to be separated from attachment to one's own lower desire realm, which is the first dhyāna. Similarly, the one-pointedness of mind, together with its concomitants, that is separated or caused to be separated from attachment to the first, second, and third dhyānas, respectively, are the samāpattis of the second, third, and fourth dhyānas in order. Here, one should distinguish between the four dhyāna samāpattis and their four abodes. Sixth, the basis for classification and the classifications of the immeasurables. First, it is the mind that arises from relying on dhyāna and possesses immeasurable objects and results. It is divided into four: immeasurable loving-kindness, immeasurable compassion, immeasurable joy, and immeasurable equanimity. In order, these are immeasurable loving-kindness, which desires to establish all sentient beings in happiness; compassion, which desires to protect from suffering; joy, which rejoices when beings possess happiness; and immeasurable equanimity, which thinks of being free from attachment and aversion. Seventh, the basis for classification and the classifications of the formless samāpattis. First, it is a higher realm's samāpatti that is included by any separation or causing separation from attachment to one's own lower form realm and the first three formless realms, respectively. It is divided into four: the formless samāpatti of space, which, during practice, contemplates and familiarizes itself with the idea that the perception of form is coarse and the perception of space is peaceful; the samāpatti of consciousness, which contemplates and familiarizes itself with the idea that the perception of space is coarse and the perception of consciousness is peaceful; the samāpatti of nothingness, which contemplates and familiarizes itself with the idea that the perception of consciousness is coarse and that, from the object alone, there is nothing at all; and the

These are the samādhis of the peak of existence. Eighth is liberation, which has a basis for classification and classifications. First, it is the samādhi that is not defiled by the afflictions of its own ground and is grasped by the thought of seeking liberation. There are eight classifications: as previously explained, the four liberations included in the four formless samādhis, and the liberation of a form-possessor viewing form, the liberation of a formless one viewing form, the liberation of overcoming obstacles of suffering, and the liberation of cessation. The latter four are, in order: establishing the concept of form in one's own body and then transforming by focusing on external forms; establishing the concept of formlessness in one's own body and then transforming by focusing on external forms; contemplating the beauty and ugliness of forms as interdependent, and finally believing that all forms are suffering; and the cessation liberation of blocking coarse feelings and perceptions, these four. Ninth is the samādhi of gradually abiding, which has a basis for classification and classifications. First, it is a special samādhi that gradually enters from the previous object to the next. There are nine classifications: as before, the four dhyānas, and the four special formless samādhis, making eight, and one cessation samādhi. Tenth is the gate of liberation, which has a basis for classification and classifications. First, it is a samādhi that, by focusing on subtle or coarse selflessness and impermanence, etc., in any way, acts as an antidote to opposing factors. There are three classifications: the gate of liberation of emptiness, which focuses on emptiness and selflessness; the gate of liberation of signlessness, which focuses on cessation and the path; and the gate of liberation of wishlessness, which focuses on the four aspects of impermanence and suffering, and the origin. These are what liberate from any kind of obscuration or are the gates of liberation, therefore, they are called the gates of liberation. Eleventh is supernormal cognition, which has a basis for classification and classifications. First, it is that which is obtained through practice or is innate, and which directly knows objects by its own power, together with its concomitants. There are six classifications: the supernormal cognition of magical power that directly realizes various transformations; the supernormal cognition of the divine eye that directly sees subtle or coarse forms; and the divine ear that sees subtle or coarse sounds.
