Moreover, in our own country, those with the lineage of the Hearer Vehicle and the Great Vehicle primarily establish refuge in the Three Jewels by taking refuge in the Buddha Jewel. Even without entering the path, they establish the Three Jewels within the category of the three lineages based on the three kinds of aspiration to make offerings to the Three Jewels separately. As it is said in the Ratnagotravibhāga: "The teacher, the teaching, and the meaning of learning, the three vehicles and the three doers, by making aspirations the master, establish the three refuges." Second, with regard to the ultimate refuge, it is only the Buddha who has perfected the path; with regard to the conventional refuge, it is the opposite of that. As it is said in the Ratnagotravibhāga: "In the ultimate sense, the only refuge is the Buddha." There is a reason for calling it "Jewel." As it is said in the Ratnagotravibhāga: "Because it is rare to arise, because it is without defilement, because it is powerful, and because it is the ornament of the world, because it is supreme, and because it is unchanging, it is a Jewel." Fourth, regarding the cause lineage or element, there are four points: definition, classification, individual meanings, and the proof that all sentient beings have the Buddha-nature. First, here, "element" means lineage, so generally, it is the potential to become a Buddha. This is the definition of Buddha-nature. The classifications are two: the naturally abiding lineage and the developing lineage. First, the definition and classification of the naturally abiding lineage. Suchness, included in the potential to transform into the Dharmakaya in the continuum of sentient beings, is the definition of the naturally abiding lineage. The classifications are two: the naturally abiding lineage in the continuum of individuals who have not entered the path and those who have, or three according to the classification of the three vehicles. Second, the definition and classification of the developing lineage. The potential to transform into the Rupakaya of the Buddha, included in conditioned phenomena, is the definition of the developing lineage. The classification according to whether one has entered the path and the vehicle is the same as before. Third, of the two, the naturally abiding lineage and the developing lineage, the latter refers to wholesome minds, mental factors, and some non-associated compositional factors in the continuum of sentient beings, especially renunciation, great compassion, the mind of enlightenment, and the wisdom that realizes emptiness. All of these are

Because it is the lineage of the Buddha, one will become a Buddha. Moreover, this can also be transformed into the conditioned body of the Buddha's realm, which is easy to understand. The former, the naturally abiding lineage, can be transformed into the Dharmakaya of the Buddha's realm. This is established on the emptiness of the nature of the minds of all sentient beings, and not elsewhere. The reason why all sentient beings attain Buddhahood is also because, in general, all sentient beings have the Buddha-nature in theirContinuum. In particular, it is because of the reason that there is a naturally abiding lineage. Therefore, saying that all sentient beings will ultimately attain Buddhahood is not merely following the words of others, but must be ascertained by valid scriptural and logical proofs. One must clearly ascertain how the minds of all sentient beings are empty in the ultimate truth. For this, one must first understand well the establishment of the two truths. In particular, one must understand well how it is not contradictory that all phenomena do not inherently exist even to the slightest extent, and that the dependent arising of cause and effect is reasonable. Based on that, one must know the luminosity of the mind that does not inherently exist, and how adventitious defilements such as stains are temporary like clouds. Based on that, one must know that one can eliminate defilements with the power of antidotes, and that if one practices the path, one will ultimately attain Buddhahood, etc., not just in words, but one must gain certainty with valid reasoning. Therefore, it is easy to establish the naturally abiding lineage merely in name, but it is very difficult to establish it from the perspective of understanding the meaning well. Saying that all sentient beings attain Buddhahood also means that if a path of means to obtain the result arises, one will gradually attain Buddhahood based on it. It is not liberation without effort, just as one can walk in the sky if one obtains miraculous powers. Considering that it is difficult to fully understand the state of the lineage, it is said in the Ratnagotravibhāga: "The lineage of these three jewels is the object of all seers, and it also has four aspects in order, and cannot be conceived by four causes." etc. Because of concern about too much, I did not write it. Therefore, as long as one cannot, like the Prasangikas, establish from the depths of one's heart the establishment of the two truths in general and in particular, that the phenomena of samsara and nirvana do not inherently exist even to the slightest extent, and that all the functions of conventionality are reasonable, as a union of two that is non-contradictory and reasonable.
