Just like the non-existence of rabbit horns and donkey horns. As it is said in the Engaging in Bodhisattva Behavior: Just as those with cataracts see illusions of hair, although they see those appearances, they are not real. Similarly, one knows the ripening and non-ripening of karma. Therefore, from the maturation of negative karma, one sees that the maturation of virtue comes from virtuous actions. Furthermore, not seeking the maturation of virtuous and non-virtuous actions can also be established, just as barley and other seeds produce their respective unerring fruits. Not only does a temporary result arise from the cessation or destruction of karma, but also, just as a sprout arises from the cessation of a seed, even though the earlier and earlier bodhicitta ceases, the fruit of ultimate bodhi also arises from it. As it is said in the Compendium Sutra: From a seed arise sprouts, flowers, and fruits; it is not the case that the seed ceases and the tree does not exist. Similarly, the initial mind is also the cause of bodhi; it is not the case that the mind ceases and bodhi does not exist. Secondly, the way to abandon permanence and annihilation for all compounded phenomena is as explained in the meaning of the Extensive Play Sutra. The meaning of that sutra is also stated in the Root Wisdom: That which arises in dependence on something, is not, for the moment, that very thing, nor is it something other than that. Therefore, it is neither permanent nor annihilated. Furthermore, in general, when any result is fully produced, its cause must also be fully ceased, so there is no fault of the cause remaining permanent. The result is the continuation of its own cause, so the cause is not annihilated either, and therefore it does not become permanent or annihilated. Therefore, the manifestation of the result arising and the manifestation of its cause ceasing are simultaneous, and the complete production of the result and the complete cessation of its cause are also simultaneous. Fruits and so on are produced when their own cause exists, and even if they are produced when the cause does not exist, there is no contradiction, just as milk initially does not actually exist, but later, when it encounters conditions, it newly arises. If the way to abandon permanence and annihilation for karma is as stated above, then, is the "I" at the time of accumulating karma the same as the "I" at the time of experiencing the maturation? No. If it is, then the previous accumulator of karma

If the "I" were permanent, otherwise, the one who creates karma would not experience the ripening result, and the one who experiences the ripening result would not have created karma, which would lead to the fault of uncreated karma encountering and created karma being wasted. Answer: There is no fault. Although the "I" at the time of accumulating karma does not experience the ripening result, both the "I" at the time of accumulating karma and the "I" at the time of experiencing the ripening result are parts of the general "I." Therefore, all the actions done by one's previous and subsequent "I" can be established as being done by oneself. Furthermore, one's "I" has two aspects, general and specific. The general "I" exists in all one's previous and subsequent lives, while the specific "I" refers to the "I" of each life, as well as the "I" of the beginning, middle, and end of a lifetime, and the "I" of years, months, days, mornings, and afternoons, etc., which do not encompass all previous and subsequent lives. Therefore, although the previous "I" creates karma and the subsequent "I" experiences it, it can be established that oneself experiences it, so where would there be the fault of uncreated karma encountering and created karma being wasted? Therefore, it is also reasonable to recall, "I was this and that in a previous life." Then, what is the meaning of the Buddha saying, "I was previously a hermit named the Sage of Patience"? Answer: There is no fault. This indicates that the two are of the same mind-stream, not that the Buddha himself and he are the same, because correct reasoning can refute that the two are the same. If the two were the same, then Buddhas and sentient beings would also become the same, and similarly, ordination and non-ordination, old age and youth, previous and subsequent lives, and the common basis of the six realms of beings would also become existent, etc. Furthermore, the two cannot be the same, because the Root Verses says, "In former existences, whatever arose, that is not this." If one thinks that there is no fault in the morning "I" being the afternoon "I," then there is a fault. If that were the case, not only would it cause the common basis of old age and youth to exist, but it would also cause the common basis of morning and afternoon, and similarly, days and nights, months, and years to exist, etc. The common basis of two consecutive years does not exist, because when the following year arises, the previous year no longer exists, because when the following year begins, the previous year has ended.
