This is because the basis of the previous year, the twelve months, have ended, so that year also ends. As Je Rinpoche's commentary on the Root Verses says, "Therefore, for a year to end, twelve months must end. After that, the year does not exist, because all continuations do not remain in the second instant of self-established time." Therefore, months and days should also be applied in the same way. Through these reasonings, it should be understood that the person in the morning is not the person in the afternoon, because the time in the morning is not the time in the afternoon, just as time changes, so does the person. If the person does not change, then that person would become permanent. The above statements are the views of Je Tsongkhapa. In the commentary on the Root Wisdom, Je says, "Devadatta, without distinguishing the self of past and future times, the self that is the object of grasping 'I' is merely the self that has existed since beginningless time. And the selves of the various beings when taking bodies such as gods are each a distinction of the former. The self that Devadatta grasps as 'I' by distinguishing each birth is a part of the self of each life." And, "When Devadatta of this life remembers previous lives, he remembers 'I was born there and there before,' but he does not remember 'I was born there and there' because of the distinction of time in this life. Therefore, the self that is the object of the arising of 'I' that Devadatta of this life focuses on also exists in previous lifetimes, so it is not contradictory to remember in this way. If Devadatta of this life existed in the previous life, it would not be the same as being permanent. Similarly, for the future rebirth of a person, even though the person of this time will not go to the next life, the object of 'I,' just the 'I,' will still follow there, so it is reasonable to abandon the cause of suffering, non-virtue, fearing suffering in future rebirths, and to strive for virtue here for the sake of happiness. For example, even though this person of today does not exist tomorrow, because of the fear that the suffering of hunger and thirst will occur tomorrow, one starts storing food and drink from today, and fears the suffering of old age.
