Because of being established. The coming and going of Devadatta are also phenomena, empty of inherent existence, because they arise from the prior action of Devadatta's coming and going. Without Devadatta, there is no coming or going. Coming here is also a phenomenon, empty of inherent existence, because it is merely conceptually imputed. Although you are coming in relation to your own side, you are going in relation to the other side, just like this mountain and that mountain. Furthermore, when Devadatta is staying, is he going and coming or not? If he is, then Devadatta would always be going and coming. If not, then what is that staying and going and coming that is different in essence from Devadatta? In that case, it must be admitted that Devadatta abandons staying and goes and comes, so his going, coming, and staying are sudden, and therefore not established from his own side. Devadatta goes, comes, and stays, but his going, coming, and staying are not him, and there are no going, coming, and staying that are different from Devadatta. Moreover, when Devadatta walks on the road with his own feet, the act of walking is not Devadatta, his feet, or the road, and there is no walking that is different from them. Similarly, this should be applied to coming and so on. Furthermore, for the seer and seeing, the speaker and speaking, the hearer and hearing, etc., the same reasoning should be applied as before to establish their lack of inherent existence. A pot is a phenomenon, you are empty of inherent existence as one, because you arise from relying on the collection of many parts such as your mouth, bottom, etc. A pillar and a pot are phenomena, empty of inherent existence as different, because establishing them as different is merely conceptually imputed, you are established as different by relying on the other, because from your own side you are not different. If from your own side you are different, then the pillar and the pot should each be different, and there would be no one on top of the two. Therefore, the pillar is different from the pot, but in general, it must be admitted that the pillar is one, so both one and different are merely conceptually imputed, and it can be determined that they are without inherent existence. Furthermore, oneself is other than another person

O, possessor of dharma! Because inherent existence is nonexistent, it is merely imputed by conceptual thought. You yourself, possessor of dharma! The 'other' that is different from others is merely imputed by conceptual thought, you being established as 'other' is established in dependence on a companion. For you alone, without a companion, one would not say 'other,' but rather it is appropriate to say 'self.' As it is said in the Root Wisdom: 'Other depends on other to be other, without other it does not become other. If other is other from other, then without other it would become other.' Therefore, it is said. Furthermore, like knowable and existent, and like made and impermanent, those that are said to be different names for the same meaning, and like permanent and impermanent, and like earth and sprout, those that are different meanings, one should also understand the way in which they are without inherent existence as before. Here, the reasoning that refutes inherent existence in the eight things such as arising and ceasing is mainly shown, but since other reasonings are not mainly explained, those also need to be understood from elsewhere. Second, explaining how to abandon the extremes of permanence and annihilation in relation to karma, there are three points: identifying the nature of karma, the way of accumulating it, and the reason for how its result arises. The first is: The noble Nagarjuna said in the Root Wisdom: 'The best of ascetics said that karmas are thought and what is thought. The distinctions of those karmas are fully proclaimed in many ways. Among them, the karma that is said to be thought, that is considered to be mental karma. The karma that is said to be what is thought, that is considered to be physical and verbal karma.' As it is said, there are two karmas, thought and what is thought, and among them, the karma of thought is a mental factor that is concordant with mental consciousness, that is mental karma. The karma of what is thought is the physical and verbal karma at the time of engaging in action, having been instigated by the karma of thought. Furthermore, there are three karmas: virtuous, non-virtuous, and unspecified. The two, virtuous and non-virtuous, produce desirable and undesirable results respectively, while unspecified karma cannot produce results. Second, the way of accumulating karma, in summary, there are three: If one mainly aims for the mere experience of happiness in this life, then the accumulation of non-virtuous karma is strong. If one mainly aims for happiness in the next life, then one accumulates virtuous karma. If one mainly aims for the happiness of meditative stabilization or equanimity,
