If it is established by its own nature, then it is unreasonable to change into something else, so it must exist at the time of its own cause. Whether I admit self-origination or not, it will arise from myself, so it is prevented as before or refuted by other reasoning. Furthermore, there is no origination from self, because if there were, the fruits would all become the nature of their own cause, so from the perspective of being their own cause, they would become the producer, and from the perspective of being their own fruit, they would become the produced, so all actions and agents would become one. The "Entering the Middle Way" says: If you think that it arises from self, then the object to be produced and the producer, the action and the agent will also become one; if they are not one, then admitting that it arises from self will lead to the fault of extensively explaining what is not to be done. Therefore, it is said. Furthermore, there is no origination from self, because the sprout does not arise even though it exists at the time of its own cause, because the essence of the seed does not change, the sprout will not arise; if it arises without changing, then the shape and color, etc., of the two periods of the seed and the sprout will be no different. Therefore, the "Entering the Middle Way" says: The action of the seed as the agent cause, and the shape of the sprout, the color, taste, function, and maturity are all different, but you will not have them. Therefore, it is said. Furthermore, there is no origination from self, because the sprout cannot be found completely in the aggregation of causes and conditions of the sprout, or in any of its parts. Therefore, the "Root Wisdom" says: If there is a result in the aggregation of causes and conditions, then it should be possible to find it in the aggregation, but in reality, it cannot be found in the aggregation itself. Therefore, it is said. Second, refuting origination from other. The "Entering the Middle Way" says: If another arises relying on another, then thick darkness will also arise from the flame, and everything will arise from everything, because the body that is not the producer is also the same as the other. As it is said, if the cause established by its own nature arises from elsewhere, then the cause and effect become different in nature, and these two will become mutually independent others, and if so, they will become unrelated independent entities, unrelated independent entities...

If cause and effect are thus established, then just as fire produces smoke, it should also follow that flames can produce the thick darkness that they eliminate; and it should follow that all things that are causes or non-causes can produce all things that are effects or non-effects. But this is unacceptable, because we see that effects arise unerringly from causes. This is just an example; to understand well the meaning of arising from another, it depends on grasping the extent of the object to be refuted, which is established by its own nature, so the detailed methods of refutation should be learned from elsewhere. Third, it does not arise from both, because it has already been argued that it does not arise from either one, which is easy to understand. Fourth, it is impossible to arise from no cause, because we directly perceive arising with a cause, and it is meaningful to establish a cause for the sake of the effect. Furthermore, it is impossible to arise from no cause, for if it did, then peacock feathers should also exist on crows, etc.; and if it arose simultaneously in the same place, then it should follow that it arises in all places, etc., there are countless harms. This is also easy to refute. Realists believe that things arise from any of the four extremes, therefore they accept arising established by its own nature. But consequentialists believe that things arise nominally, but not from any of these four extremes, therefore they believe that it is not arising by its own nature. As it says in the *Entering the Middle Way*: "Because things do not arise from self, from other, from both, or from no cause, therefore it is said that all phenomena are without self-nature." Therefore, if one understands and meditates well, it can also be transformed into meditating on the meaning of emptiness. As Je Tsongkhapa's commentary on the *Root Wisdom* says: "Even if one determines that there is no arising by its own nature based only on the meaning of the verse 'not from self,' one will not lack the resources for meditating on suchness. Therefore, those who want to understand the meaning of the non-arising of their own mind and meditate on it should also study only this much." Third, showing other reasonings, as it says in the *Extensive Play Sutra*: "Just as a sprout arises from a seed, but that sprout is not the seed itself. It is not different from it, nor is it the same, thus it is neither permanent nor annihilated, such is the nature of phenomena." As the sutra says, the sprout arises from its own seed, but at the time of arising, the seed no longer exists, so it is arising.
