Therefore, one who is worthy to guide refuge. Such a Buddha arises from the prior manifestation of the Dharma of abandonment and realization, and is therefore explained by the scriptures. The Dharma Jewel of realization, encompassed by abandonment and realization, is worthy as the actual refuge. This Dharma Jewel also depends on the noble ones who are students practicing properly, so thinking of those noble ones as worthy to be companions in accomplishing refuge. Through the door of remembering their qualities, generate strong faith and arouse a fervent mind desiring assistance. By the power of this, as it is said, "Whoever holds faith as paramount, before them the Thubpa (Buddha) resides." Thus, thinking that those objects of refuge, by the power of great compassion, appear manifestly in the sky before you. To the Buddha, supreme among bipeds, I go for refuge! Please be my teacher who liberates me from the fears of samsara and the lower realms. To the Dharma, supreme among those free from attachment, I go for refuge! Please be my actual refuge who liberates me from the impure samsara and the fears of the lower realms. To the Sangha, supreme among assemblies, I go for refuge! Please be my companion who liberates me from the fears of samsara and the lower realms. Recite this twenty-one times or seven times, etc., and perform the purification of radiating light. Second, the precepts: Having gone for refuge to the Buddha, do not go for refuge to worldly deities, and even to their images, regard them as actual Buddhas. Having gone for refuge to the Dharma, abandon harming sentient beings, and even to a four-line verse, regard it as the Dharma Jewel. Having gone for refuge to the Sangha, do not be too intimate with non-Buddhists or bad friends, and even to someone merely with the appearance of a renunciate, regard them as the actual Sangha. Offer the first portion of whatever you eat or drink. The benefits of going for refuge: being included among Buddhist practitioners, karmic obscurations being removed, accumulations being perfected, etc., are many. Second, cultivating the faith of fundamental belief: Even though you have gone for refuge to the Three Jewels, if you engage in the acceptance and rejection of black and white actions in a reversed manner, then even the Three Jewels cannot protect you. Therefore, you must properly accept and reject black and white actions. If you divide good and non-good actions into subcategories, there are many varieties.

Furthermore, to summarize roughly, the paths of black and white karma can be categorized into two sets of ten karmas. Regarding this, there are three points: the result of black karma, the result of white karma, and how to engage in and avoid these karmas. First, among the ten karmas is killing: Recognizing a sentient being as distinct from oneself, with the motivation of any of the three poisons of greed, hatred, and ignorance, desiring to kill, and then either doing it oneself or instructing others, using knives or poison, etc., ultimately causing the being to die before oneself, then the actual basis of the non-virtuous act of killing is completed. Stealing: Regarding gold and other items not owned by oneself but possessed by others, recognizing them in one's mind, and with the motivation of any affliction, desiring to separate them, then stealing them through various means, and ultimately generating the thought of having obtained them, then it is completed. Sexual misconduct: Regarding objects possessed by others, or one's own relatives, etc., who are not to be engaged with sexually, or even if they are objects to be engaged with, but non-limbs such as the mouth and anal passage, or non-places such as stupas, or non-times such as fasting days, in any of these situations, recognizing them in one's mind, and with the motivation of any affliction, desiring to engage in sexual activity, then striving for this, and ultimately the union of the two, etc., then it is completed. Lying: Regarding someone who does not possess clairvoyance, etc., recognizing this in one's mind, and with the motivation of any affliction, desiring to alter their understanding and lie, then expressing it through any gesture of body or speech, and ultimately the other person understanding the meaning, then it is completed. Slander: Regarding two individuals, recognizing them in one's mind, and with the motivation of any affliction, desiring to separate them, then speaking words that can cause separation, and ultimately the other person understanding the meaning, then it is completed. Harsh speech: Regarding sentient beings who are the basis for causing others pain, recognizing them in one's mind, and with the motivation of any affliction, desiring to speak harsh words, then revealing the other person's faults, and ultimately the other person understanding the meaning, then it is completed. Idle talk: Regarding meaningless matters, recognizing them in one's mind, and with the motivation of any affliction, desiring to speak randomly, then beginning to speak idle talk, and ultimately finishing speaking, then it is completed. Covetousness: Regarding the wealth and possessions of others, recognizing them in one's mind, and being attached to one's own possessions.
