Think about the suffering of the cold hells: Imagine experiencing the suffering of blisters forming and shrinking as a great blizzard blows from all directions. The bursting of blisters is: colder than that, the blisters burst, and pus and blood flow out. "Achu" is said to be: colder than that, emitting such a sound with a strong voice. "Kyihud" is said to be: colder than that, emitting that sound from the depths of the voice. "So tham tham pa" is: colder than before, unable to make a sound, the teeth chatter. "Cracking like a blue lotus" is: colder than that, the body's color turns blue, cracking in five or sixty places. "Cracking like a lotus" is: colder than that, turning into bright red flesh, cracking in ten or so places. "Cracking like a great lotus" is: even colder than that, the body's color turns red, experiencing immeasurable suffering from cracking in a hundred or more places. The duration is: filling a large container that holds eighty loads with sesame seeds. Taking out one sesame seed every hundred years, the time it takes for all the sesame seeds to be used up is the lifespan of the blister hell. It is said that the lifespans of the other hells are twenty times longer than the previous one. Now, not to mention staying naked for a long time in the extremely cold winter, even staying for a short while is difficult to bear the suffering of the cold. Thinking about how the previous suffering was extremely long, how could one endure it? Thus, contemplate this deeply within your own mind. Furthermore, also think about the suffering of the hells near the two hells, and in human realms and seashores, which are shaped like ropes, pestles, brooms, pillars, walls, and large drains. Secondly, animals: Those dwelling in space are piled up like heaps of grain within the area below the waterline. The big ones eat the small ones, and the small ones pierce the bodies of the big ones. In the thick darkness, one cannot even see the stretching and contracting of one's own limbs, and there is the suffering of being pressed down by each other. The Naga race has the fear of gravel and Garuda. If born as birds and wild animals, they are tormented by hunters and others. Think about the suffering of horses, cattle, donkeys, etc., being used, beaten, etc. In short, if I do not want to experience even a little suffering from being beaten by others now, how can I bear to become a donkey in the future?

If one becomes a beast of burden, being repeatedly beaten like a pack animal by another, one should contemplate how one could endure such suffering! Third, the preta realm: Imagine being born in a place devoid of all desirable objects and extremely terrifying. Among them, those with external obscurations cannot find food or drink. If they see rivers and fruit-bearing trees, when they approach, they are blocked by guardians wielding weapons, or they see only pus and blood. Those with internal obscurations have mouths like needle eyes, throats like horsehairs, bellies as large as a region, and limbs like reeds. They cannot find food or drink, and even if they do, they cannot fit it into their mouths. Even if they fit it in, it cannot pass through their throats, and even if it passes through, it does not fill their bellies. Those with obscurations of food and drink find that whatever they eat or drink bursts into flames, burning their insides. They eat unclean things and even cut off their own flesh to eat. Contemplate the suffering of saying it is hot in summer and cold in winter. In short, even now, it is difficult to live even a single day without food and drink. If one is born as a preta, one will experience the suffering of hunger and thirst without finding food or drink for a long time. How could one endure that? Therefore, one should think of practicing the means to be liberated from those sufferings right now. Second, there are two ways to achieve happiness in future lives: cultivating refuge, which is the gateway to the teachings, and generating faith in the law of cause and effect, which is the root of happiness and well-being. The first has two aspects: the actual practice and the precepts. The first is: It seems necessary to seek a true refuge that can protect one from the sufferings of the lower realms mentioned above. As it is said in the scriptures: "The Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha are the refuge of those who desire liberation." As it is said, the Buddha, the Bhagavan, is adorned with physical marks and signs, pleasing to all who see him; his speech possesses sixty-four qualities and can answer questions in languages that are understood by all sentient beings; his mind directly perceives all knowable objects and constantly watches over all sentient beings with great compassion; his activity continuously benefits beings effortlessly and spontaneously; he is liberated from all fears and is skilled in liberating others, possessing such qualities and
