As it is said in the scriptures, "Ultimately knowing." Here, the practice of the path of the lower capable being, as taught here, has two parts: generating the mind to seek benefit in the next life, and showing the means to happiness in the next life. The first has two parts: contemplating death and impermanence, and contemplating the suffering of the lower realms. The first: If you do not contemplate death and impermanence, you will be controlled by the appearances of this life and will not accomplish the means to happiness in the next life; if you contemplate it, you will naturally or involuntarily engage in practicing the Dharma for the sake of the next life, so contemplating it has three parts: the certainty of death, the uncertainty of when you will die, and contemplating that at the time of death, only the Dharma will benefit, and nothing else. The first: Even the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the past who had attained mastery over birth and death showed the manner of passing into Nirvana; the Panditas and kings and ministers of India and Tibet, in short, there was no one in the past who could escape death and attain liberation, let alone ordinary beings like us. Moreover, death at a fixed time cannot be averted by any cause, such as mantras or medicines, so death is certain. From the moment of birth, like the aging of the sun or the invasion of frost, we do not remain still, but day by day, night by night, we gradually and quickly go to the presence of the Lord of Death; when life is exhausted, there is no addition, so death is certain. In childhood, we do not want to practice, and in old age, we are unable to practice; in between, we are busy with food and clothing, or distracted by sleep, and have no time to practice the Dharma, but we must die, so we should think like this. Second, contemplating the uncertainty of when you will die. Generally speaking, except for unpleasant sounds, everything else has a lifespan, but none of them can be certain; especially the people of Jambudvipa, in the first kalpa, had immeasurable lifespans, and eventually they will decrease to ten years, which is very uncertain. Now, many people older or younger than oneself die out of order, which is obvious, so there is no certainty when one will die. There are many causes of death, such as external enemies, spirits, fire, water, etc., and internal diseases of the four elements; the causes of survival, such as unsuitable food and medicine, and struggles caused by enjoyment, can also lead to death, so there is no certainty when one will die. Even this great earth, together with Mount Meru, may be destroyed, let alone this small body of mine, which will die from even a slight imbalance of internal and external causes, so today

Considering that there is no certainty of not dying, one should think that there is no telling when one will die. Third, at the time of death, nothing is beneficial except the Dharma: when going to the next world, one cannot take even one relative or friend. Even if there is a pile of wealth, one cannot take even a speck of dust. Let alone the perfections of this life, even one's own body is left lying on the bed, and only consciousness goes alone to the next world. One should repeatedly think that the only thing that is beneficial is the sacred Dharma. Therefore, one must resolve to practice only the Dharma from now on. Second, contemplate the suffering of the lower realms: The venerable Nagarjuna said: One should remember the hells of extreme heat and cold, as long as a day. One should remember the pretas tormented by hunger and thirst. One should look at and remember the animals full of the suffering of ignorance. As it is said, one must contemplate the suffering of the lower realms. If one does not contemplate, one will not turn away from its cause. If one does not turn away, one will not escape experiencing suffering. Therefore, contemplating the suffering of the lower realms will generate fear, and generating fear will generate aversion to the cause of the lower realms, and thus one will strive for ways to avert it, such as taking refuge, etc. Therefore, there are many necessities. The way to contemplate is: death will surely come, and after death one will not cease to exist, but will surely take rebirth in one of the two realms. Moreover, it is certain that virtuous actions will lead to rebirth in the higher realms, and non-virtuous actions will lead to rebirth in the lower realms. I have accumulated and am accumulating the cause of the lower realms—non-virtuous actions—as numerous as a king's treasury. But the cause of the higher realms—virtuous actions—not even one reliable one can be seen. Therefore, there is no choice but to be reborn in the lower realms. When reborn there, the way to experience suffering is not to look outward at the suffering of others, because the consciousness that looks outward is difficult to fall on oneself, so one should think that one is experiencing the suffering oneself. There are three of these: the suffering of hells, animals, and pretas. The first is to contemplate the suffering of the hot hells and their retinues, and the suffering of the cold hells. The first is: in general, the suffering of the hells does not necessarily have to be experienced in sequence, but here, practicing in sequence is of great help in generating experience.
