The eighth stage of mind-abiding is to accomplish the continuous arising without being interrupted by sinking and excitement. Then, through the power of familiarity from the sixth stage, the ninth stage of mind-abiding, which is called naturally placing the mind on the object of focus, is accomplished. That is, during the first two stages of mind-abiding, among the four types of attention, it is the attention of applying effort; from the third to the seventh, it is the attention of interrupted application; at the eighth, it is the attention of uninterrupted application; and at the ninth, it is the stage of effortless application. The ninth stage of mind-abiding is in accordance with Śamatha. After that, mental pliancy arises, and based on that, physical pliancy arises, and through its power, a feeling of bliss arises in the body. Then, the bliss of mental pliancy arises. Immediately after physical pliancy arises, even if Śamatha has not yet been attained, then, along with obtaining the unwavering pliancy that is in accordance with the Samādhi of the mind abiding steadily on the object of focus, Śamatha, which is mainly gathered by the preparatory stage of the first Dhyāna, is accomplished. The details of dispelling obstacles and increasing benefits should be understood from the larger treatises. Such Śamatha is the common Samādhi of both vehicles, and whichever's intention it is grasped by, it will become a cause for attaining Bodhi. Sixth, the nature of wisdom is to thoroughly distinguish phenomena in the objects of investigation. Wisdom, when grasped by the dedication that dedicates it to perfect enlightenment and when practice is perfected, is its Pāramitā. It is considered good not to consider Prajñāpāramitā and the Pāramitā of wisdom as having the same meaning. Among them, there are three types of wisdom: the wisdom that realizes ultimate and conventional truths, and the wisdom that accomplishes the benefit of sentient beings. The first is the wisdom that realizes selflessness. The second is the wisdom that is skilled in any of the five sciences. The third is the wisdom that skillfully accomplishes the benefit of sentient beings. Here, the main point is to ascertain the wisdom that realizes suchness. This has two aspects: meditative equipoise and subsequent attainment. The first has two aspects: ascertaining selflessness and the method of cultivating Vipassanā. The first has two aspects: ascertaining the selflessness of persons and the selflessness of phenomena. The first has four points, including the key to determining what is to be refuted, the first

For example, when someone bestows a great favor upon you or causes great harm, you feel "he helped me" or "he harmed me." This complete "I," which is the object of favor or harm, clearly appears from the depths of your heart. At that time, the way of grasping of the innate ego-grasping becomes clear. Even if it doesn't exist now, clearly point it out, let it arise again, and then focus on how the thought "the essence of the mind is me" arises. From one corner of your mind, look at where that ego-grasping grasps "I," and how it grasps. By looking in this way, it sometimes seems to be on the body, and sometimes it seems to be on the mind. In the end, various ways of appearing arise, to the point where it seems to be mixed with both body and mind, and it seems impossible to distinguish them. In this state, something that doesn't rely on anything, that from my own perspective seems to be inherently existent and established from the beginning, will appear. Recognizing this is to properly understand the key to what needs to be negated. The second point is: Is the "I" that is grasped in this way the same as or different from your own body and mind? Or is it neither the same nor different? If it exists, it must be either the same or different, so recognizing that there is no third possibility that is neither the same nor different is the key to determining pervasiveness. The third point is: Is such an "I" established by becoming one with both body and mind? That is not reasonable. If it becomes one, then it becomes an indivisible one. Then the indivisible one is "I," and the distinction between the receiver of the two, body and mind, and the object to be received, such as "my body and mind," will disappear. One cannot commit to the idea that "I" is no different from body and mind. If that were the case, then "my body, my mind," etc., would be unreasonable, and it would only become "the body is peaceful, and the mind is me." Therefore, admitting the self that takes and abandons aggregates becomes meaningless. Furthermore, if "I" is one with the body, that is also unreasonable. Because when the body is cremated after death, "I" must also be cremated; when "I" is reborn in the next life, I must be born with this body, and so on. If it is one with the mind, that is also unreasonable. Because just as "I" have a head, feet, hands, etc., the mind should also have these. Or, just as there are two, body and mind, "I" should also have two different
