There are three types of benefiting beings. The first is: not to mention the benefit of many sentient beings, even for the benefit of one sentient being, one must remain in hell for countless great kalpas, and even if it is necessary to do so to achieve Buddhahood, one does not give up diligence. Accumulating virtue and dharma is: in order to perfect the six perfections, one studies them and diligently makes offerings to the Three Jewels, etc. Benefiting sentient beings is: diligently working for the benefit of sentient beings through eleven ways of benefiting activities. The opposing factors to diligence are: laziness in procrastinating, thinking there is still time; laziness in being attached to and indulging in temporary, small pleasures; and laziness in feeling discouraged, fearing difficulties and suffering, and shrinking back, thinking that one cannot do it. If these arise, they should be prevented. The fifth is: the one-pointedness of mind that does not stray from the object of virtue is the nature of meditation. From this, body and mind are at ease, qualities are manifested, and there are three types of benefiting beings. The first is: meditation that generates physical and mental pliancy. The second is: meditation that accomplishes qualities such as clairvoyance. The third is: meditation that benefits sentient beings. The main content of meditation is the two, Shamatha and Vipassana, and here, the method of practicing Shamatha is briefly shown. The place for meditation is: a place where favorable conditions are easily obtained, a good place, good land, etc., that is pleasing to the mind. The individual who relies on it has qualities such as few desires and contentment. In general, there are many objects, but because there is a need to remember the Buddha and complete the accumulation of merit, etc., the image of the Buddha is taken as the object. On a comfortable cushion, sit in a proper posture, repeatedly look at a well-made statue of the Buddha, grasp its characteristics, and get used to having it appear in the mind. First, clearly visualize the various parts of the body, such as the head, and finally place the overall image in the mind, and even if only about half of the rough limbs can appear, be content with it because it is the object. Abiding in the eight postures mentioned in the scriptures, count twenty-one breaths, etc. Then, in order to practice Samadhi, if there is laziness in disliking practice, forgetting the object, agitation and dullness, engagement and non-engagement, these five faults

Therefore, it is necessary to accomplish through relying on the antidotal diligence, aspiration, faith, pliancy, mindfulness, and awareness, as well as the equanimity of engaging in and not engaging in antidotes, that is, the eight activities. Regarding this, first, with the faith of seeing the qualities of samadhi, with a straight and strong aspiration, visualize the body of the Buddha, which has been familiarized, like pure gold, adorned with marks and signs, radiating light, of appropriate size, in the form of the actual Buddha, and request it in the sky in front of your brow. For that object, with a firm grasp of certainty, with the sharpness of awareness, and with the stable state of not being distracted by mindfulness, in a way that possesses both, do not forget it. Then, examine whether dullness and excitement have arisen, and if they are about to arise, recognize them with awareness. If the clarity of the object exists, but the sharpness of the clarity and the strength of the grasp have weakened slightly, then subtle dullness has arisen, so tighten the mind's grasp and meditate. If the sharpness of the clarity suddenly disappears, and only clarity remains, then it is gross dullness, so recognize it and take countermeasures. If a pleasing object is about to appear, it is subtle excitement, so stop the mind from wandering and fix it on the object. If the appearance of desire suddenly arises, it is gross excitement, so recognize it and stop it. Thus, by stopping dullness and excitement, grasp the point of appropriate tension and relaxation, and meditate according to your own experience, and you will achieve flawless samadhi. If that is not accomplished, then accomplish it through the six powers, in the order of the nine mental abidings and the four mental engagements: First, with the first power of hearing, accomplish the first mental abiding, placing the mind on the object. Then, with the second power of thinking, accomplish the second mental abiding, continuously placing the mind on the object. Then, with the third power of mindfulness, accomplish the third mental abiding, remembering and placing the mind on the object, and the fourth, close placement. Then, with the fourth power of awareness, accomplish the fifth mental abiding, subduing the pleasure of samadhi, and the sixth mental abiding, stopping the displeasure of samadhi, making it peaceful. Then, with the fifth power of diligence, accomplish the seventh mental abiding, making sleep and drowsiness completely peaceful,
