Due to what cause, by accumulating any kind of black or white karma of action, and imbuing the habit of that karma onto the consciousness of the causal time, and by nourishing it with the craving of desire and the grasping that clings to it, the dependent origination of existence becomes powerful. When that very consciousness of the causal time takes rebirth in either of the two realms in the next life, the dependent origination of the consciousness of the resultant time is established, and simultaneously, the dependent origination of name, such as feeling, and form, such as sprouts, and birth are also established. As it grows, the dependent origination of the sense bases, such as the eye, is established. Then, the object, faculty, and consciousness come together, resulting in the dependent origination of contact. From that comes the dependent origination of feeling. The aspect of the aggregates changing in age is aging, and abandoning the similar kind of aggregates is the dependent origination of death. This is considered to be complete in two lives, but there are also cases of completion in three lives. In summary, it can be categorized into two causes and effects that propel, and two causes and effects that accomplish. That is, ignorance, action, and the consciousness of the causal time are the causes that propel, and the five from the half of consciousness—the consciousness of the resultant time—to feeling are the results that are propelled. Craving, grasping, existence, and karma are the causes that accomplish, and birth and aging-death are categorized as the results that accomplish. Furthermore, by what is it propelled? It is propelled by any kind of black or white karma of action that relies on ignorance. How is it propelled? It is propelled by imbuing the habit of that karma onto the consciousness of the causal time. By what is it accomplished? It is accomplished by grasping that has the condition of craving, and what is accomplished by that is birth and aging. In this way, contemplate the way in which one repeatedly revolves in the place of samsara, like a wheel of fire, and generate a strong sense of weariness and a strong desire to be liberated from it, and strive to increase it. Moreover, one should contemplate the dependent origination of the lower realms and train the mind in the path that is common with the small person, and contemplate the dependent origination of the higher realms and train the mind in the path that is common with the middling person. Second, the nature of the path to liberation is: after seeing the faults of samsara, generating the desire to definitely emerge from it, one must strive in the three higher trainings. Among these, the training in ethical conduct is: etc.

and whatever vows one has taken, strive to keep the precepts of abandoning the ten non-virtuous actions, which are the main natural transgressions. The main points of the training in concentration and the training in wisdom are encompassed by calm abiding and insight, so one should train as explained below. The training in discipline defeats manifest afflictions, concentration suppresses them, and wisdom abandons the seeds of afflictions, thereby leading to liberation. Strive to protect the precepts as much as possible, but if faults occur due to carelessness, etc., then understand and guard the four doors through which downfalls occur. If faults still occur, then think, "Alas, this is truly harming oneself," because the results of actions are infallible, and doing this will cause one to fall into the lower realms in the future. Think in this way and constantly strive to apply the four powers of confession. Among actions and afflictions, afflictions are the main thing, but clearing away karmic obscurations is more important than the initial action, as Je Rinpoche himself has said. Third, training the mind in the stages of the path of the great being: Although striving in the three trainings to liberate oneself from cyclic existence and thereby achieving liberation is supreme, it is not enough here. As it is said in the Lamp for the Path: "Whoever wishes to completely pacify the suffering of others through the suffering of their own continuum of thought, that person is supreme." Thus, one must accomplish the benefit of all sentient beings, and for that, one must enter the Mahayana path. This has two aspects: the basis for practice, which is generating the mind of enlightenment, and the way to train in the practice. First, if one asks what is the door to enter the Mahayana, it is the mind of enlightenment. From the moment this mind arises in one's continuum, one is included among the Mahayanists, and if it has not arisen or has declined, then no matter what qualities one has, one is not included among them. Therefore, it is like the uncommon cause of the Buddhas, like a seed. There are two instructions for training in this: the tradition of the great Jowo and the tradition of the royal son Shantideva. First, the way to train through the sevenfold instruction of cause and effect: the result, Buddhahood, arises from the mind of enlightenment, which arises from pure higher intention, which arises from great compassion.
