Generally, these two are not contradictory. If it is a thing, then it must be both the immediate result and the cooperative result. Because if that is the case, you must have both the immediate cause and the cooperative condition. Because the production of a single result also requires both causes and conditions to be complete, it is impossible for a result to arise from only one cause. In short, like cloth made from wool and thread, pottery from clay, gold vases from gold, various sprouts from seeds, and beings transforming from humans after death into gods and eventually into Buddhas, these are all immediate results arising from their own immediate causes. And the fact that those things arise sequentially from weavers, potters, goldsmiths, planters, or water and fertilizer, white and black karma, and accumulating merit and purifying obscurations, is because they arise from cooperative conditions, and are their cooperative results. Therefore, cloth and so on are immediate results in relation to their own materials like thread and wool, but they are cooperative results in relation to weavers and so on. Second, if we divide the results by the kind that can be expressed by words, there are five: the result of maturation, the result of similarity to the cause, the result of dominance, the result of action, and the result of separation. First, there are many results of maturation, such as the five aggregates of contaminated immediate causes that arise from the cause of maturation, whether virtuous or non-virtuous. Specifically, the result of maturation propelled by virtue is all the bodies of the happy realms, and the result of maturation of non-virtue is all the bodies of the bad realms. Maturation and the result of maturation are the same in meaning, and the result of maturation must be unspecified, neither virtuous nor non-virtuous. As it is said in the Treasury of Knowledge: "The dharma of maturation is unspecified." The experience of pleasure and pain in the body now is merely a change of maturation, so it is merely labeled as maturation, but it is not the actual maturation. So, why is the experience of pleasure and pain called past karma? This is because the reason is as before, and the name of the cause is applied to the result. Second, there are many results similar to the cause. As it appears in the great texts, the virtuous result similar to the cause...

Long life, great enjoyment, praise and respect, friendship and harmony, many pleasant things, and interest in virtuous deeds, etc., are abundant. The co-operative result of non-virtue is: short life, many diseases, small enjoyment, being hated by others, many unpleasant things, slander, and dislike of virtuous deeds, etc., are abundant. Third, regarding the dominant result, the dominant result of virtue is: the place where one is born is pleasant, food and drink, etc., are powerful, fruits are abundant, droughts are small, garbage, etc., are not abundant, causes of fear are few, infectious diseases are not abundant, etc. In short, in those places, it is pleasant and many wishes are fulfilled. For non-virtue, the opposite of what was said before occurs. However, for this dominant result, it is necessary to know that there are both common and uncommon dominant results. Fourth, the result of human effort is: like the crops cultivated by farmers, the buildings built by craftsmen, the gold hammered by blacksmiths, as well as the drawing of Buddha statues, etc., and the writing of letters by artists and scribes, obtaining profits from gambling and business, and pacifying diseases by administering medicine and performing rituals, etc., are abundant. Fifth, the separation result is: individual distinct cessations, which have the same meaning as the truth of cessation, and this result is only possessed by noble ones, not by ordinary beings. The limit of nirvana is also a separation result, and that is obtained through the power of cultivating the path, and since it is separated from all kinds of things to be abandoned, it is only nominally called a result, but it is not a real result, because if it is either a cause or a result, then it is a conditioned phenomenon. Therefore, the separation result is unconditioned, and the others are conditioned. Like seeds and sprouts, and birth and death, it is easy to determine that these are cause and effect, but the way in which one after another, the former and the latter, become cause and effect is somewhat difficult to determine. For example, morning and afternoon are cause and effect, and standing and walking, as well as sleeping and sitting, stretching and contracting, as well as speaking and not speaking, etc., are also that each latter is the cause of the former, and each former is the result of the latter, although it may become the meaning of momentariness and impermanence, it is difficult to understand. For that understanding, for example, when the fingers of the hand are made into a fist, it becomes the cause of that.
