The Essence of Eloquence on the System of Cause and Effect. The Essence of Eloquence on the System of Cause and Effect. The treatise called The Essence of Eloquence on the System of Cause and Effect. Namo Manjushriye! By the power of knowing what is and is not the case, you directly see the distinctions of cause and effect as they are, and you clarify them for beings. I respectfully prostrate to the Powerful Sage, the supreme refuge. Here, in order to gain certainty about what to accept and reject through correct reasoning, it is necessary to understand the system of cause and effect. Therefore, the Bhagavan has shown this system extensively in many sutras, and the great chariot masters have established its meaning through scripture and reason. In particular, the two great chariot masters, the brothers Asanga and Vasubandhu, have clearly explained it in their two treatises, the Abhidharmasamuccaya and the Abhidharmakosa. However, these treatises are vast, and their meaning is profound and difficult for others to understand. Therefore, here I will gather the meaning into one place and explain it, mainly according to the system of the Abhidharmasamuccaya. There are three parts to this: explaining the system of cause, condition, and effect. The first part has two sections: definition and classification. The first is: That which produces is the definition of a cause. Here, the term "definition" means that since it is a counter-entity, it is also the meaning of what is being defined. That which produces that dharma is the definition of the cause of that dharma, just as that which produces a sprout is the definition of the cause of a sprout. Similarly, that which directly produces that dharma is the definition of the direct cause of that dharma; that which produces that dharma indirectly is the definition of the indirect cause of that dharma. This principle should also be applied to sprouts and so on. However, there are exceptions, such as that which produces a vipaka is not the definition of the cause of a vipaka. The second, classification, has two aspects: classification by essence and by way of expression. The first has two types: the substantial cause and the cooperative condition. The first has a definition, an example, and a meaning of the term. That which mainly produces its own substantial result in its own continuum is the definition of being a substantial cause. Combined with a basis, that which mainly produces a sprout in its own continuum is the definition of itself being the substantial cause of a sprout.

Similarly, apply it to pillars, vases, and so on. The example is: the seed of a sprout is the substantial cause of the sprout. The meaning of the term is: it is able to transform into whatever is its own proximately obtained result. For example, the seed of a sprout becomes a sprout, and clay must become its own proximately obtained result, such as a clay pot. However, merely transforming into one's own subsequent material continuum does not mean that one must acknowledge that one has transformed into the general result, just as threads gather to become cloth, but each individual thread does not become cloth. Second, the definition, example, and meaning of the term for cooperative conditions. The definition of being a cooperative condition is that it primarily produces its own cooperative result, which is not its own material continuum. When applied to a basis, the definition of being a cooperative condition of a sprout is that it primarily produces the sprout, which is not its own material continuum. Similarly, apply it to other things such as pillars and vases. The example is: water, fertilizer, temperature, and moisture that become the cause of a sprout, and the person who sows the seeds. Although, relative to one basis, the substantial cause and its cooperative condition are contradictory, in general, the two are not contradictory, because all things with a continuum are substantial causes, and if a thing exists, then it is a cooperative condition, because there is no thing that does not have its own result. The meaning of the term is: although it does not act as a substantial cause, it helps and befriends it, for example, water, fertilizer, etc., which become the cause of a sprout, although they do not act as the substantial cause of the sprout, they become friends in producing it. As it is said in the Pramāṇavārttika: Whatever helps is what produces. Therefore, if it is the cause of that result, there must be something that helps that result. For example, when a woodcutter cuts a tree with an ax, at that time the tree being cut is harmed, so it is not the cause of that, but the woodcutter and the ax cut the tree and helped it, so the woodcutter and the ax both become the tree being cut and the cause of cutting it. Similarly, apply the reasoning to other things. In summary: the basis where any result arises when any cause exists is called the cause of that.
