Therefore, in the Pramāṇavārttika, it says, "If something exists, then something arises; if something transforms, then something transforms; that is called a cause." Just as it is said. Secondly, there are the efficient cause, the co-emergent cause, the similar cause, the equipotential cause, the pervasive cause, and the maturation cause, thus explaining six causes in total. First, regarding the efficient cause, there are its essence and its divisions. The essence is that object which is mutually different from that thing, and which is also a common basis that does not hinder the arising of that thing, is the essence or definition of the efficient cause of that thing. If it is the efficient cause of that dharma, then it is not necessarily the cause of that dharma. As for the divisions, there are many explanations in the Abhidharmakośa and its commentaries, such as the three conditions gathering to produce consciousness, which is the cause of arising; the four foods nourishing the body, which is the cause of existence; the earth acting as a support, which is the cause of reliance; a lamp illuminating objects, which is the cause of manifestation; fire transforming firewood, an axe cutting roots, and a blacksmith transforming gold through hammering, these are all types of transforming efficient causes. Similarly, the inference arising from the sign of smoke realizing fire, understanding the intentions of others through argumentative language, is the cause of knowing; the path causing the attainment of nirvana, is the cause of attainment; it preventing faults, is the cause of prevention; from symbols arising names, from names arising things, and from things arising terms, like this; hunger driving the efficient cause of seeking food; ignorance accumulating karma, is the proximate cause; ignorance producing aging and death, is the distant cause. Furthermore, there are also the efficient causes of fields, water, fertilizer, etc., holding crops; whatever conditions cause others to be happy or unhappy; black and white karma respectively throwing beings into different situations and destinations; the efficient causes of causes and conditions gathering to produce different fruits, and causing different fruits to cease, and so on, there are many. In short, in the root and commentaries of the Abhidharmakośa, it is explained that all causes are included in the efficient cause, therefore the efficient cause is very extensive. Therefore, the other five causes are also included in the efficient cause, but they are distinguished by the difference in necessity and mode of action. Some say.

If it is said that "it is pervasive that if it is a causal factor, then it must be distinct," then there is a fault that the causal factor is too small in scope. I say that if it is a thing, then it must be both cause and effect. Similarly, if it is a cause, then it must be a causal factor, which is the view of Tibetan and Chinese scholars. Therefore, in general, the definition of a causal factor does not include "mutually distinct." The Abhidharmakosha says, "The cause that produces effects other than itself." This is clearly made from the perspective of the basis. Even when applied to the basis, if it is a co-occurring condition of that dharma, then there is no dispute that it must be its causal factor. Second, the co-emergent cause has a nature and a characteristic. They are mutually assembled, simultaneous, and also distinct. The common basis that does not hinder mutual arising is the nature of the co-emergent cause. This is merely designated as cause and effect to each other, but it is not a real cause and effect. The characteristic is: the four elements of earth, water, fire, and wind, together with the derived elements, that exist in one aggregate, and the mind and mental factors that are simultaneous and distinct, and that cannot arise without each other, etc. Third, the corresponding cause has a nature and a characteristic. They are mutually the same in five corresponding aspects, and they do not hinder mutual arising. The common basis is the nature of the corresponding cause. It is considered that this and the previous two are not contradictory, but it should not be done according to the system that believes that the former must be substantially different. The five correspondences are: the same basis, object, aspect, substance, and time. The characteristic is: the mind and its retinue of mental factors, etc. This is also merely designated as cause and effect in the sense that friends arise mutually, one existing and the other arising, and one not existing and the other not arising. Some believe that the mind and its retinue of mental factors are substantially different, but Gyaltsab and Khedrup both believe that they are the same substance. Fourth, the cause of equal ripening has a nature and a characteristic. It produces the later similar kind that is the same as itself. Itself is the nature of the cause of equal ripening. In terms of characteristics, there are two types of causes of equal ripening: afflicted and non-afflicted. The first is: the previous affliction produces the later affliction of the same kind, such as ignorance producing ignorance, and desire producing later desire.
