It is said that there is no contradiction in saying that karma is like having a black intention but a white action. Some say that the action done with an unwholesome motivation but a wholesome intention is white karma with a black ripening; and the action done with a wholesome motivation but an unwholesome intention is black karma with a white ripening. Some say that this is reasonable, because good and bad depend on the goodness or badness of the motivation, so the former action is black and the latter is white. As it says in the Garland of Precious Gems of the Middle Way: "The three, desire, hatred, and ignorance, the actions produced by them are unwholesome. There is no desire, hatred, or ignorance, the actions produced by them are considered wholesome." Although they say this, it is still necessary to analyze as mentioned above. In general, I think that karma, depending on the intention, has various situations such as the main part being white while the beginning and end are black, the beginning and end being black while the main part is white, all three being white, all three being black, and mixed. Because of the appearance of various situations such as the motivation being white while the intention is black, and vice versa, both being white, both being black, etc., the main part also becomes complete or incomplete, and becomes white or black in various ways. Moreover, in the end, whether or not one rejoices or regrets also causes the white or black to be different. Because even if the motivation is to help others, harmful thoughts arise during the intention and action, and vice versa. For example, even in giving, different motivations arise. Not only giving with a good motivation, but also robbing others of their property to give, giving unwillingly, giving with the intention to kill, giving with the expectation of return, giving out of attachment, giving merely for friendship, etc., various different situations arise. Similarly, it should be understood that there are various situations in keeping precepts, etc. Fifth, explaining the ten paths of action: Although there are many kinds of wholesome and unwholesome actions, they are mainly summarized into ten. As it says in the Treasury of Knowledge: "From these, having summarized the great and small, the paths of action are said to be ten, for whatever is wholesome and unwholesome." It is like that. This has two parts: the ten unwholesome paths of action and the ten wholesome paths of action.
