Because there are virtuous actions that can destroy (karma), and non-virtuous actions that can definitely be purified through the confession of the four powers, although unindicated karma does not necessarily produce ripening results, it does produce results, as it produces results of similar cause and results of dominance. There is a difference between contaminated and uncontaminated karma: all virtuous and non-virtuous actions in the continuum of ordinary beings are contaminated karma, but in the continuum of Hinayana noble ones, there is contaminated karma. In the continuum of Mahayana noble ones and their Arhats, there is only uncontaminated karma, and no contaminated karma. As for the continuum of Buddhas, let alone contaminated karma, there is not even uncontaminated karma, because uncontaminated karma requires subtle effort and conceptualization, while Buddhas do not have effort and conceptualization. There is a difference between meritorious karma, non-meritorious karma, and unwavering karma: virtuous actions in the desire realm are meritorious karma, non-virtuous actions are non-meritorious karma, and actions included in the upper realms are unwavering karma. The reason they are called meritorious and non-meritorious karma is because they bring protection and do not bring protection. Although unwavering karma is generally virtuous, the reason it is called unwavering is because the ripening results of the two actions in the desire realm change and fluctuate, while the ripening results of unwavering karma do not mature from the upper realm to other desire realms, so it is called unwavering. As stated in the *Abhidharmakosha*: "Because in which ground, in those, karma ripens, hence called unwavering." The ripening of the two actions in the desire realm is changeable. For example, giving alms can bring great enjoyment to the bodies of gods and humans, but due to many acts of killing, one may be reborn as the son of an elephant guarding the land, adorned with various ornaments. As stated in the *Abhidharmakosha-bhashya*: "That which matures among the gods sometimes matures among humans, animals, and hungry ghosts due to the power of other conditions." This is also because of the failure to protect moral discipline.

Therefore, (he) was born as an elephant. The ripening of generosity does not lead to rebirth as an animal, because it has already been explained that a virtuous cause does not lead to rebirth in a bad realm. However, there, the result of generosity became the ripening of (the elephant's) size, color, and enjoyment. This is a difficult point, so it needs to be studied in accordance with the great treatises. There are three differences in karma: experiencing pleasure, pain, and equanimity. This is only distinguished from the way of experiencing the result, because they are the three categories of virtue, non-virtue, and neutral. Because virtuous karma produces pleasure, non-virtuous karma produces suffering, and neutral karma is distinguished by experiencing equanimity between pleasure and pain. There is a difference between karma that is certain to be experienced and karma that is uncertain to be experienced. As Asanga said in the *Vast Exposition of the Grounds*: "Karma that is certain to be experienced is that which is intentionally done and accumulated." "Karma that is uncertain to be experienced is that which is intentionally done but not accumulated." Because it is said like that. These differences will be explained below. In the *Abhidharmakośa*, it says: "Increased and intense afflictions, fields of merit, and constant actions, whatever is done, that is the karma; those who kill their parents will definitely receive retribution." It also explains six types of karma that are certain to be experienced, which is in terms of the main factor. Certain to be experienced means that if that karma has no antidote, then it will definitely be experienced. If it is karma that is certain to be experienced, it does not necessarily mean that the ripening result must be experienced, because the *Great Commentary on the Eight Thousand Verses* says that if one performs confession with the four powers, even bad karma that is certain to be experienced can be purified. Uncertain means that even without an antidote, it cannot produce a result by its own power, but if it encounters supporting conditions, it can also produce a result. There are three differences in karma, such as that which is experienced in this life. That is, the ripening of the karma done in this life manifests in this very life, which is experienced in this life; that which ripens in the next life is experienced in another life; and the karma that will ripen in the life after the next life is karma that will be experienced at another time. These three, such as that which is experienced in this life, are from the perspective of the ripening result beginning to manifest, but it is not necessarily limited to these three lives, because the continuous rebirth
