Moreover, even if (karma) has ceased, the habitual imprints it leaves on the mind-stream, this continuum of dependent arising that exists in one's own being, if it encounters supporting conditions, it will produce the corresponding results. Just like a dream, even if it has been long gone, it is reasonable that a karmic action that is without inherent existence produces a result that is without inherent existence. Chandrakirti, in his *Entering the Middle Way*, summarizing the essence of the *Sutra of the Meeting of Father and Son*, says: 'Just as, having seen objects in a dream, attachment arises in the foolish even when awake; likewise, even though karma has ceased and is without inherent existence, a result comes from it.' Therefore, one should rejoice and be happy about the virtuous deeds one has done, and if dedicated to perfect enlightenment, they will increase and not be exhausted, and so on, so one should do that. For non-virtuous actions, one should do one's best to apply the four powers of confession. Because it is said that if one confesses vigorously, even karma that is certain to be experienced can be purified. Some very powerful karmas that are certain to be born in the lower realms and experience great suffering can be purified merely by practicing the antidote of the Perfection of Wisdom—the power of the practices of Samantabhadra—so that one experiences a small residue of the karmic result in this life and is completely exhausted from the root. As the *Perfection of Wisdom in Three Hundred Lines* says: 'Shariputra, any son or daughter of good family who takes, holds, keeps, reads, and fully understands the words of such a sutra as this will suffer, and will suffer greatly.' Why is that? Shariputra, because those beings have done non-virtuous deeds in previous lives that would cause them to be born in the lower realms, but by suffering in this very life, those non-virtuous deeds of previous lives will be purified, and they will also attain the enlightenment of a Buddha.' And in *Blazing Logic* it is also said: 'The karmas that cause birth in hell, by that, in this life, only the head becomes hot.' Therefore, if someone asks: 'The sutra says that karmas will not be wasted even after hundreds of kalpas, and that the ripening of previous actions is not obstructed by anything,' how should this be explained? There is no fault, the first case is definite if there is no antidote.

This refers to the former case. The latter refers to cases where karmic results have already matured, such as blindness, deafness, and muteness, which are difficult to cure. Therefore, it is extremely important to adopt and abandon good and bad actions. Due to the power of karma, not to mention ordinary beings, even lower or higher noble beings are born in samsara. It is also possible for Bodhisattva ordinary beings who have not attained forbearance on the path of accumulation and the path of preparation to be born in the lower realms. Because there is no place where karma cannot reach. The Jataka says: The maturation of karma is inconceivable; even with great compassion, one may still be born as an animal. The Heap Sutra says: Wherever one may be, there is no place where karma cannot reach; it is not in the sky, not in the ocean, not even in the valleys of mountains. In short, it is especially important to understand all phenomena, such as karmic results, as being empty of inherent existence and as dependent arising. The Samadhiraja Sutra says: Like illusions, bubbles, mirages, and lightning, all phenomena are like the moon in water. Although beings who die and go to another world are not visible as being born from karma, karma is not in vain; good and bad deeds will ripen their fruits. This method of reasoning is the best; it is subtle and difficult to see, and it is the realm of the Buddhas. Therefore, I say: From the many scriptures of the Buddhas, especially from the ocean of teachings in the Abhidharma Sutra, with the finger of wisdom, I have taken a small portion of the classification of karma. By this virtue, may I and others purify the accumulation of karmic obscurations from beginningless time until now, and may we obtain the excellent higher realms, the continuous bodies of gods and humans, and ultimately attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. This was written by Shakya Bhikshu Drakpa Shedrup in the Chone residence, and the scribe was the faithful and wise Abbot Drakpa Wozer. "The Mirror Clarifying the Categories of Karma."
