Again, it is empty in the manner of transmigrating to the evil destinies of other dependencies. After that, a being in Jambudvipa generates the samadhi of the first dhyana in their continuum, and it is empty in the manner of transmigrating to the first dhyana. Likewise, the east and west are also empty. Unpleasant sounds are empty in the manner of transmigrating to the desire gods. In the continuums of the gods from the Four Great Kings up to the Paranirmita-vasavartin, the actual basis of the first dhyana arises through the power of the Dharma-nature, and it is empty in the manner of gradually transmigrating to the first dhyana. After that, in the continuums of the gods of the first dhyana, the samadhi of the second dhyana gradually arises, and it is empty in the manner of transmigrating to the second dhyana. Its duration is nineteen intermediate kalpas. Then, the manner in which the container is emptied is as follows: seven suns gradually rise, gradually burning trees, small streams, great rivers, oceans, continents, the seven mountains, Mount Meru, and so on, down to the immeasurable palace of the first dhyana, making everything the nature of space. That has the duration of one intermediate kalpa. Second, there are two parts: how to meditate on emptiness and the necessity of meditating. The first is: after reciting the verse from the second chapter of the Root Tantra, "Because there is no entity, there is no meditation," one should meditate on all phenomena as being empty of inherent existence. The meaning of this is explained in terms of the two of the four ways: the literal meaning and the general meaning. First, explaining it in terms of the literal meaning: when examining external and internal objects with reason, when external and internal objects are not found, holding the thought that external and internal objects do not exist, meditating in that way is not meditating on the meaning of suchness, because in that case, the meditator and the object of meditation, etc., would become utterly nonexistent. Holding that the object of meditation is inherently established and meditating, that is also not meditating on suchness, because there is not even a little bit of an inherently established object of meditation. Thus, the object of meditation, the act of meditation, and the meditator are all inherently without an object, because all external and internal objects are completely separated from the four extremes of inherent existence: nonexistence, inherent existence, both, and neither. In short, the first line prevents the extreme of nihilism.

The second step negates the extreme of permanence. The third step negates that both are, and summarizes the meaning of the former, thereby indirectly negating the fourth extreme. Generally speaking, for things with form, there are many parts of direction; for things like consciousness, there are many parts of their respective previous and subsequent moments; for non-composite things, one can also distinguish many parts such as their respective bases of designation, relations, places, times, etc. At that time, these are all with parts, and because they are with parts, they are interdependent, and therefore, one should meditate that there is no place where they are truly established. When examining in this way, thinking that the nature of phenomena is not truly established is the gate of liberation—the way to meditate on emptiness; thinking that the cause of arising is not truly existent is the gate of liberation—the way to meditate on the signless; meditating that the result to be produced and obtained is not truly existent is the gate of liberation—the way to meditate on the wishless. Thus, the object of meditation, the method of meditation, and the meditator are all not established by nature, because all of this is merely imputed by mind or conceptual thought. The former is the literal meaning, which only explains the way of obtaining words, while the general meaning here is the meaning to be practiced in common by both Sutra and Tantra. To summarize the method of meditation: In this way, when one examines well with the reasoning that investigates the ultimate truth, the aspect of emptiness that negates the object to be negated will appear in the mind. At that time, except for the aspect of emptiness, the aspect of conventionality will not appear in the mind, and even if it appears, it will not be followed, but it will be prevented, and only the aspect of non-affirming negation will be allowed to appear in the mind. If the mind is mature, there is no need for a separate way to gather appearances, but if it is not mature, one should imagine all the outer and inner worlds as a mass of light, and then gradually dissolve, finally merging into oneself. Oneself also gradually becomes invisible, remembering to look in that state, and staying in the state of looking. Meditating in this way is also called meditating on the ground of wisdom, just as the sky that is empty of the previous container becomes the basis for the later formation, so the wisdom that meditates in this way becomes the basis for relying on increasing faith, becoming the basis for meditation. Secondly, it is necessary to meditate on emptiness at this time, because one newly realizes the emptiness that was not previously realized, and stabilizes the emptiness that has already been realized.
