Regarding the biography of Acharya Simhabhadra: In the past, in the east, in a forest called Simhalengka, there was a large tree, and a tree deity resided on the tree. A shepherd from that area passed away, and his wife was very beautiful. When she went to graze the livestock, the tree deity had intercourse with her, and a special son was born, named Gopala. His father gave him a precious jewel, and through the power of this jewel, he was able to rule the entire earth. He built Nalanda Monastery. One of his lesser consorts, in order to control the king, consulted a Brahmin Acharya for a method. The Acharya took medicine from the Snow Mountains, cast a mantra on it, and gave it to a maidservant. The maidservant accidentally slipped and fell, and the medicine fell into the water, gradually flowing into the ocean. The Dragon King took and swallowed the medicine, and thus the Dragon King gained the power to rule the ocean. He met the consort, and a son, Palden Chokyong (Glorious Dharma Protector), was born. When offering sacrifices on an auspicious day, a snake's head appeared. The king was very angry and prepared to punish him. When he saw the ring, he saw the letters of the Naga, so he showed respect again and raised him. He wanted to build a temple that was more special than other temples, so he asked a diviner. The diviner said, "Make seedlings with the cloth of monks and Brahmins, take butter from the homes of the king and merchants, take a bowl from the abode of ascetics, light a butter lamp, place it in front of the yidam and pray. An emanation of Chokyong will discard the bowl, build there." After doing as he said, a crow came and threw the bowl into the lake, and he was very disappointed. At night, the Dragon King, a five-headed snake, appeared and said, "I am your father, drain the lake and start building. Hold a grand sacrifice every seven days." After doing as he said, after twenty-one days the lake dried up, and the Odantapuri Monastery was built. That king had four sons: a king, a pandita, an accomplished one, and a king who committed evil deeds. Because he was worried that the last son would quarrel over property, he gave him a jewel. He had a son named Devapala, who had the power of prayer and was very devoted to his mother. He stole the jewel from his father.

A bhikshuni offered a jewel to a Dharma teacher who was expounding the Prajnaparamita Sutra. Her father learned of this and said, 'A jewel is something that only a king should possess. A bhikshu should be content with little desire. You are not like that.' So he seized her jewel. Immediately after the bhikshuni died, she made a prayer to be reborn as the son of her own disciple, a prince. As a result, she became a king named Sakya Yong, who had great faith in the Prajnaparamita. He began to search everywhere for someone who could expound the Prajnaparamita. At that time, there was a teacher named Simhavarma, who had renounced the world from a royal family. He was learned in all the tenets of both internal and external schools, and was especially well-versed in the meaning of the Prajnaparamita. He asked his abbot, Namnang Zangpo, for the sadhana of Maitreya and practiced it. In a dream, he dreamed of a bhikshu with saffron-colored robes and beautiful conduct, and was told, 'Go to Khasarpani in the east!' He awoke and went there, fasted for three days, and examined his dreams. At dawn, in a dream, he saw in the sky above the Gandhola of Odantapuri Vihara, from within a thick cloud, the upper body of a deva emerging from the clouds, making offerings with various substances. He asked what they were doing, and they replied, 'We are making offerings to the venerable Maitreya's Eight Thousand Verse Prajnaparamita.' He gazed for a long time and saw the venerable Maitreya with a golden face, adorned with a stupa on his crown, his right hand in the teaching mudra. He prostrated and made offerings, and asked, 'Now that there are many commentaries on your treatises, which one should I follow?' Maitreya replied, 'Thoroughly understand all the treatises, gather their essence, and you should compose one yourself.' He received permission. Having awakened, he made offerings, and in order to find a patron for writing the treatises, he traveled from east to west. King Sakya Yong heard that the teacher Simhavarma was learned in the Prajnaparamita, and sent a messenger to invite him. The messenger met him and invited him. In accordance with the commentaries of the noble ones, he wrote the condensed meaning of the Twenty Thousand Verse Prajnaparamita in eight chapters, as well as the Great Commentary on the Eight Thousand Verse Prajnaparamita, the Meaning-Clarifying Commentary, the Easily Understood Condensed Commentary, and the Prajnaparamita Meditation, and so on. It is said that this is how it happened. In the Great Commentary on the Eight Thousand Verse Prajnaparamita
