After that, he asked a yogi for the practice of Manjushri's sharp wisdom, and through practice, he saw the deity. Soon after, his father passed away. On the night before the coronation ceremony, he dreamt that the venerable one was sitting on the throne where he was supposed to sit the next day, and said: 'The only child, this is my seat. I am your spiritual friend. It is not appropriate in any way for you and I to sit on the same seat.' Upon waking up, he knew that he could not inherit the throne, so he fled and took ordination before the leader of five hundred panditas at Nalanda, the king's chaplain, and was named Shantideva. He listened to the Dharma of the noble conduct of inner practice and meditated on it. Although he composed profound treatises, no one knew his outer behavior except for eating, sleeping, and walking. Therefore, he was known as Bhusuku the Third. Others judged his outer behavior and thought that the activities of an ordained person were the three wheels, but this person did not conform to any of them, so they thought that the offerings he received were not to be enjoyed and should be expelled. They thought: 'Let him take turns reciting the scriptures, so that he will leave on his own.' So, they arranged for him to recite the scriptures, but he said he could not do it. They reported to the abbot, who said: 'Arrange it yourselves.' So they arranged it for him. He agreed to recite. Some people wondered what was going on and were doubtful, so to test his realization, they set up a high throne in the midst of many people. Then, in an unseen way, he pressed the throne with his hand and went up, and most people became doubtful. Then he asked: 'Should I recite what has been recited before, or what has not been recited?' They requested him to recite what had not been recited. The *Shikshasamuccaya* (Compendium of Trainings) was extensive, and the *Sutrasamuccaya* (Compendium of Sutras) was small, so he recited the *Bodhicaryavatara* (Engaging in the Bodhisattva's Deeds), which was concise in words but extensive in meaning. When he recited the verse 'When there is existence and non-existence' from the chapter on wisdom, he gradually rose into the sky, and finally his body disappeared, leaving only his voice, and he departed after completing the recitation. Afterwards, those who had obtained dharani compiled what they had remembered, and it became seven hundred verses, one thousand verses, and more than one thousand verses, so people were doubtful. Also, the *Shikshasamuccaya* says: 'It should be viewed again and again.' Or, to put it briefly for the time being, it is the *Sutrasamuccaya*.

Furthermore, if one does not understand the meaning of "to see," having heard that he resided at the auspicious stupa in the south, he sent two monks to invite him, and upon meeting him, inquired about those things. They said, "The 'Compendium of Trainings' and the 'Collected Sutras' are written in small Pandit scripts between the bones of my chest. That is the thousand verses of the 'Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life.'" And he prophesied those things, and also gave the transmission of explanation and practice. After that, he went to the east and debated with someone who was engaged in a great debate, and through miracles, he reconciled everyone and placed them in happiness. Again, in the western part of Magadha, not very far away, he stayed with a retinue of five hundred people who held strange views. After a while, a great famine occurred, and food was cut off, and they were afflicted with suffering, and they appointed as leader whoever could beg and listened to his commands. The teacher took a bowl full of rice and blessed it, satisfying everyone, and turning them away from their strange views, he placed them in the teachings of Shakyamuni. After that, a great famine occurred, and about a thousand beggars were threatened by thirst and were on the verge of death. The teacher provided food and taught the Dharma, placing them in happiness. After that, in the east, King Ari Bishana was afflicted by measles. Some lives that had not been destroyed clung to the king, and if they harmed him, they would kill the king, so it was necessary to give alms. In order to protect him, the teacher, who was acting as a bodyguard, had nothing but a wooden sword as a symbol, which was seen by a friend, who reported to the king, "This man is a deceiver, look at his weapon." The king became angry and said, "Draw your sword!" He replied, "It will harm the deity." The king said, "Even if it harms, I will. You must draw it!" He replied, "Then please cover one eye of the deity and look with one eye." So it was done, and when the sword was drawn, he could not bear its radiance, and one eye went blind. He begged for forgiveness, sought refuge, and was placed in the Dharma. After that, he went to the south of Mount Glorious, where there was a practice called "the conduct of Utchasma," which was the appearance of a beggar, naked, living on the joints of men. Katibi

The maidservant of King Hara, Kacalaha, saw that the water poured out by the bathing maid splashed on the teacher. At that time, an outsider teacher named Shankaradeva said to the king, "Tomorrow, a mandala of the Great Lord of Power will be drawn in the sky. If it cannot be destroyed, then the Buddhist temples and statues will be burned, and one must convert to the outsider's path." The king gathered the Sangha and told them about this matter, but no one dared to undertake the task of destroying the mandala, and the king was very saddened. The maidservant recounted what she had seen before, and the king said, "Go and find him." So they searched everywhere and found that person under a tree, and told him about the matter. He said, "I can do it. Prepare a full bottle of water, two pieces of cloth, and fire." They did as he said. The next night, he went to draw the lines, and everyone was puzzled. The next morning, as soon as the mandala was drawn and the east gate was finished, the teacher entered into samadhi, and suddenly a great storm arose, carrying everything away and leveling it to the ground, and the grass, trees, and the entire city were on the verge of collapse. The people gathered there were also scattered. The outsider teacher, like a bird scattered by the wind, was carried in all directions, and it became very dark. Then, light emanated from the teacher's brow, showing the way to the king and queen, who were tattered and covered in dust. The teacher washed them with water, dressed them in new clothes, warmed them with fire, and made them comfortable. After that, they destroyed the temples of the outsiders and incorporated them into Buddhism. Until now, that place is still known as the "Land Where the Outsiders Were Defeated." Although that teacher claimed to be an ordinary person, the teacher Sherab Jungne Lodro said that he was a noble being, and Nagpopa also said that the teacher's head touched the lotus feet of Manjushri. That teacher composed three works: the extensively explained *Compendium of Trainings*, the concisely explained *Compendium of Sutras*, and the *Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life*, which is extensive in meaning but concise in words. It is said that there are more than one hundred commentaries on the *Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life* in India, but there are only about eight translations in Tibet. How the prophesied person worked for the teachings.
