When listening to the Dharma, there are thirteen faults that hinder us from properly understanding the Dharma: being self-righteous towards the speaker, having improper conduct, being arrogant due to high birth, etc., not seeking the true meaning of the Dharma, being resentful due to partiality towards others, not listening attentively because of disrespect for the speaker, having a critical and argumentative attitude, not making offerings because of not contemplating the virtues of the Dharma and the speaker, despising the speaker because of thinking that the speaker's words and letters are incoherent, or that the speaker is deficient in discipline, lineage, appearance, and expression, slandering, craving for gain and respect, being distracted or drowsy and unable to concentrate, having a reversed understanding of the meaning and essence of the Dharma and not being able to think properly, and not listening attentively due to lack of intention and diligence.

O. Third, for example, even if it rains, three faults of the container will occur, preventing it from performing the function of water: first, if it is upside down or blocked, the water will not enter; second, if it is unclean, the water that enters will become defective; and third, if it has holes, the water that enters will not stay. Similarly, even if the rain of Dharma falls, three faults will occur, preventing it from performing the function of Dharma water: first, distraction and drowsiness prevent listening, so it does not enter; second, improper attention makes it defective even if it enters; and third, forgetfulness prevents it from staying. As an antidote, the Blessed One said, "Listen well and thoroughly, and keep it in mind." Furthermore, it is like a sick person not understanding the doctor's prescription, or understanding it incorrectly, or even understanding it correctly but not taking the medicine properly; and like a sick person not eating medicine, or eating unsuitable food, or vomiting after eating suitable food, these three situations are analogous. Therefore, the speaker is skilled in the analogy of the container, and if the listener is distracted, he should say discouraging words, such as, "People's lives are a hundred years, half of which is spent sleeping at night, and half of that is spent sleeping during the day." For those who are drowsy, in order to clear their minds, tell strange stories, or stories about donkeys and foals, or lions and foxes, or old men and women, or old women and thieves, and stories of crying at birth, and tell joyful stories.

Those who walk the path of happiness do so through the power of generosity, discipline, and wisdom. And all three depend on listening.

Accumulate the necessities of life, listen attentively to the inner conducive conditions, contemplate the meaning of what is heard, read the scriptures and treatises, and seek guidance from the wise. By doing so, one will perfect the wisdom of hearing, and then strive for contemplation and meditation. In the Pramāṇavārttika it says: Just as a stone of stone ash is burned by fire and destroyed by water, so too, the stone of latent afflictions is completely burned by the fire of wisdom, and if completely soaked with the water of samādhi, it will be destroyed. That wisdom also cannot arise without hearing the sacred Dharma, therefore, one should listen to the Dharma with reverence. Even if one carries the burden of words, if one does not understand the meaning, one will not obtain its meaning, just as a child has a letter of a treasure testament hung around his neck. Therefore, even with much hearing, one should strive to listen to the meaning of the sutras in order to understand its meaning. Patrollers who do not pay attention individually are robbed by thieves, even as they say, "Do not sleep." Similarly, those who are learned but only focus on the sound, if they do not pay attention individually, will be destroyed by the enemies of afflictions. If there is no understanding of the meaning, then attention is useless. Therefore, one should strive to grasp the meaning. Similarly, one can also use the example of a musician who is afraid of thieves and sings in order not to sleep, but is still robbed. Just as a blind person holding a torch can only benefit others, so too is hearing without understanding the meaning. Therefore, in order to understand the meaning, one should strive to listen to the meaning. Thus it is said. The combination of the three, that is, the first of the three, preliminary, actual, and subsequent, has three aspects. First, the intention to practice the Dharma. As it is said: After hearing, the main thing is practice. Thus it is said. Second, the conduct of reverence, that is, reverence with the three doors of body, speech, and mind. In the Jataka it says: Sit on a very low seat, increase the splendor of gentleness, look with joyful eyes, like drinking the nectar of words. Generate with reverence, pay homage with one-pointedness, with a pure and stainless mind, listen to the Dharma with reverence, just as a sick person listens to the doctor's instructions. Thus it is said. Third, contemplate the joy of the assembly of favorable conditions. The secret is inconceivable.
